Group says it has needed signatures to put fluoride to a vote

PORTLAND, Ore. – The group pushing to let the residents of Portland decide whether they want fluoride in their water said Thursday they’ve gathered the necessary signatures to put it on the ballot.
Clean Water Portland needs about 20,000 signatures to put the issue to a public vote. In a press release, referendum supporters said they had surpassed that number but are aiming for 30,000 as a buffer to ensure they have enough verified signatures. The group has until next Friday, Oct. 12 to gather the signatures.
On Wednesday, Sept. 12, Portland city commissioners unanimously voted to add fluoride to the city’s drinking water, saying it will help protect the health of the public’s teeth, especially among children.
The issue has been contentious and city council meetings have been intense – several unruly protesters were removed by police during the final vote after they yelled, cursed and hissed.
Opponents of fluoridation of the city’s drinking water say fluoride is poisonous. But city leaders say the science is clear that it is beneficial and safe.
But those who want a public vote say their success in gathering the signatures is an indication that the public is concerned about putting fluoride in the water.
“It’s obvious that Portlanders are very passionate about their drinking water and when you have people literally running up to us to sign the referendum petition it makes signature gathering a lot easier, said an active signature gatherer, Frances Quaempts-Miller, in Clean Water Portland’s press release.”
A recent KATU News/SurveyUSA poll found that 45 percent of Portland voters oppose the fluoridation of the water while 43 percent are OK with it. But 12 percent were undecided and the result was within the poll’s margin of error of 4.1 percent.
But significantly the poll found that 79 percent of the respondents wanted a public vote on the issue. One of the complaints about the issue has been that the public, and even other cities served by Portland water, has been left out of the process.
If found to qualify for the ballot, the earliest Portlanders would be able to vote on the issue would be in May of 2014, which is two months after fluoridation is scheduled to begin, unless a special election is called.
Both Portland mayoral candidates, Jefferson Smith and Charlie Hales, say they're in support of fluoridation.
When my parents moved from NYC 55 years ago they both had stomach problems, but after living in the Portland area for one year the stomach problems stopped. NYC has florid water and many elderly people have severe stomach problems some say from the fluoride in the water, if this fluoride helps fight tooth decay then leave it to the parents to make sure their children brush their teeth with a fluorite toothpaste, not in our drinking water, I wonder how much $$$$$ someone will get paid under the table to have this poison in Portland's drinking water.
The anti-fluoride crowd is just as bad as the anti-global warming crowd. My wife, a "liberal" nurse practitioner, has seen the first hand effects of children not getting proper fluoride- It rots your children's teeth if they don't get enough fluoride from a young age.
Â
If you believe in global warming, as you should, it is because the majority of climate scientist agree that it is REAL. Well, the vast majority of "teeth scientists" (aka dentists and other primary care providers) who see teeth for a living agree that public fluoride is a REAL benefit to the public.
Â
I don't live in Portland, so I don't have a dog in this fight, but fluoride is more beneficial than detrimental to our nation's public health. We all pay for poor dental health in one way or another; therefore, it is important for all of us to find sensible, fact-based, solutions to help ourselves and our children.
Â
The facts are clear! Vaccinate all children, give them all fluoride, decrease their carbon footprint and the nation as a whole will benefit in the long run.
@Waterboy For crying out loud, if it's for the teeth then why the hell do children have to DRINK it ? it's not doing the stomach any good it's for the teeth, unless some kids have teeth in their stomachs, the parents must be the ones who see that their children brush their teeth, one more thing the parents don't have to monitor is the children getting fluoride so it's like automatic dental care ? get those kids to BRUSH WITH FLUORIDE TOOTHPASTE and don't force the residents of Portland to be drinking poison.
"City leaders say the science is clear..." Oh, so they are scientists now?! I doubt they're qualified to assess the science. They're just bending to lobbyists' pressure. Like the parking meter fiasco, we will find out years later who got paid. Just put it to a vote and everyone comes away smelling fresh as a daisy. Why jam flouridation through?
Â
Hope it does make it to the ballot.
Portland's #1 mayoral candidate Tre Arrow would NEVER be for the poisoning of the water.
Everyone does realise that if it is shot down by the voters they will just impliment it anyway. They will say it's for the Health of the children so we know better then the Voters. I have seen this before.
Thank you safewateroregon.com for getting enough signatures and letting us vote. This has been rejected by the voters 3 times before & it will be rejected again. We have the cleanest water in the nation lets keep it that way. Me and the rest of the heard like organic beer. If this passes all the companies that make organic beer will either have to MOOOOVE or spend a lot of money to reMOOOve the fluoride.Â
That has to sting. Portland City Council is so used to doing whatever they want, whenever they want, that the fact that Portlanders rushed to sign petitions calling for a public vote on an issue that the Council unanimously approved has to gall their inflated egos. The fact of the matter is that a lot of folks don't much cotton to the idea ofgovernment-mandated involuntary medication, and they're getting tired of so-called representatives taking the stance that they know what's best for the little people.
This is just another expensive non-issue that the politicians have decided to champion; it's not as though fluoride isn't widely available in most dental products - indeed, one must actively search to find non-fluoridated toothpaste. And while fluoride is effective in helping to prevent dental caries and other issues when applied topically, as via toothbrush/rinse, ingestion is another matter: most people spit after brushing/rinsing, and in fact, dental products carry warnings against ingestion.
The addition to the water supply is both expensive, at an estimated $5 million (which is just about enough to pay for one of the streetcars that Sammy and Ricky love so much) and, as noted above, unnecessary. Although it would be amusing to see the Portland City Council delivered a well-deserved smackdown, the reality is that even if that occurrs, it won't matter: Portland politicians have an established history of ignoring the expressed wishes of the voters whom they purport to represent.
We voted to build Portland/Gresham light rail, and when we saw what we got, we voted down westside and northside light rail proposals. No matter; they built them anyway, and we've never been permitted to vote since.
Ditto for the Oregon Convention Center: we voted to allow Metro to build it, and it was a loser. Metro insisted that if we doubled its size, it'd become a money machine. We declined. They expanded it anyway. It still loses over $10 million per year.
So it doesn't matter what voters decide; Portland is going to add fluoride to the water supply. Amusingly, as they rail against bottled water for its lack of "greenness and sustainability", that's exactly what they'll push opponents into purchasing for consumption.
Â
I am not going to preach about the safety concerns of fluoride. I am going to focus on the cost. I think the original article reported that fluoridating the water would cost $5 million. What about the cost to maintain the fluoridated water supply? The water would have to be tested on a regular basis to ensure the fluoride content does not exceed the "safe" levels. How much would that cost? Why not use all the money that would be used in fluoridating the water to give vouchers to low-income families/individuals so they can get fluoride pills, toothpaste, etc., and leave the water alone?
Don't worry about the cost. They will just raise you're water rates to offset the cost. You will need to pay 25% more for the floride.
Salem has fluoride in its water and My sons pediatrician says its actually good for him I dont see why certain people in portland are so afraid of it. Let it happenÂ
@TinaReynolds7 Your pediatrician is a cow
You do realise that Floride is a By Product of aluminum. If you want you're kid to be on Floride then just go and buy the extra floride products that are in the store.
@TinaReynolds7 So it's ok for the government to FORCE people to take a drug against their will? Yes, the FDA has classified fluoride as a drug. I don't even want this to go to a vote because if it goes to a vote and passes, I will still be forced to take a drug against my will.
@theprodigal  @TinaReynolds7 Umm.. no you won't. You don't have to drink public water. Or you can always buy a fluoride filter if you want one.
 @TinaReynolds7 nonsense
You may have the number of signatures to qualify to put it on a ballot, but you still need to win that election. Â With the general population actually favoring adding it to the water the chances of that are small. Â Congratulations on getting that many signatures. Â How many of those will actually be validated is still to be seen.
@pdxtvguy "With the general population actually favoring adding it to the water the chances of that are small." Which is exactly why I don't want it to go to a vote. If it goes to a vote and passes, I will be FORCED to take a drug against my will.
This is ridiculous, fluoride has no negative effects in the miniscule doses it is found in fluoridated water. Natural water in some areas has much higher doses of fluoride than the amount they want to put in our water! Portland is the largest city in the country that doesn't have fluoridated water and you don't see people having major complications in the rest of the country from it. The rest of the world has been fluoridating their water for decades! People keep saying that we should give children fluoride tablets instead so they have a choice about whether or not to get fluoride, but I as a dental professional I have seen FAR more damage in the Portland area as a result of fluoride tablets, because it's too high of a dose all at once, whereas fluoridated water is very little gradually over years.
@Mandy Lynn Langenhuysen Read this: http://www.safewateroregon.org/fluoridation.html
@Mandy Lynn Langenhuysen I am against adding fluoride to the water for more than one reason. You are willing to FORCE me (and anyone else who doesn't want fluoride added to the water) to ingest it? Would you be ok with the government adding Avandia to the water supply so that people who have type 2 diabetes can get medication - thereby forcing everyone to take Avandia?
@Mandy Lynn Langenhuysen The rest of the damage in teeth that you see is from obscene sugar/soda pop/crap diets people feed themselves and their kids nowadays.
Don't forget to add the Lack of Brushing.
@Mandy Lynn Langenhuysen Then why did Sweden, Holland, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, and even Britain suspend it's use?
YEs everyone floride is a toxin, that is why 90% of the US population since the early 60's has died off because their drinking water has been laced with floride from the local governments. shame on the local governments for killing off over 90% of the population  of this country. this is why we need to import illegal workers to fill  the jobs that there are no Americans left to fill those jobs. Seems to me there should be a law banning floride in drinking water and everything else consumed by humans. On a side note all those people who have been killed by this poison did have better teeth when they were killed off.
@onceagain No one I know would make the claim that it will kill you. It has been proven to lower your I.Q. in studies. It is strange that people would have to fight so hard just to have clean water. if you want fluoride, go buy it, just don't forcefully medicate a population.
@randomdude So what you are saaying is that the rest of the country has a lower iQ than people living here in portland who have voted in a lying pedophile for a mayor ? very interesting how you have come to that stance.
@onceagain  @randomdude but you would let a lying pedophile put fluoride in your water.
@onceagain No, that is not what I am saying.
@onceagain It took me a minute to detect the sarcasm in your comment.  You never know with these anti-fluoride fascists if they actually believe things like this.
@Daniel C  @onceagain Fascists wouldn't allow a vote in the matter. I wonder what that makes the city council?
 @Daniel C True So true
Does anyone know if this poison is in the water in Beaverton.Does the water come from the same source?
@noneofyourbizzness The Tualatin Valley Water District (which services a small portion of Beaverton) has had fluoride in the water since the early 60âs, except for the Metzger area which has none. The City of Beaverton, which services most of the city, has added it since 2004. And I bet you couldn't even tell the difference!
Â
By the way the water source is different, it gets water from the Joint Water Commission that gets it from the Tualatin during the winter months, and Hagg lake and Barney Reservour during the summer. Yes, that Tualatin... and you were worried about fluoride.
@JTesla If it was me I would rather have birth control in the water. J/k :)
Stand by for the conspiracy theory nut job comments in 5...4...3...2...1...
Personally, I'd rather forego the cost of water fluoridation as I believe the benefits (and dangers) are exaggerated. However, I have little love for the fascist anti-fluoridation crowd who resort to personal attacks and shout down anyone who disagrees with them.  I'll make my own informed decisions, thank you very much.  Most of them probably need to take a chemistry class, and then they might learn that there are many different fluoride compounds, and not all of them are poisonous.
@Daniel C I'd rather use the $5 million per year on schools myself!
I just want clean water that's it.I don't want the government dictating to me what to put in my body.
I suppose you are against the government saying you should wear a seatbelt, or that you can't smoke in public places. Sometimes idiots need to be told what is best for them and clearly you are included in that group.Â
@SelfPossessed  @brlunk Your insurance rates will go up because of all the idiots who don't wear seat belts.
@SelfPossessed @brlunk SelfPossessed, one of the main reasons the indoor smoking ban came to be was to protect the health of the employees who work in those establishments. After all, why should the co-workers of a smoker be subjected to second hand smoke?
@brlunk The government should absolutely not enforce wearing seat belts. If an idiot doesn't want to wear their seat belt then let them.
Â
Designated smoking areas shouldn't be regulated by law either. If an establishment want's to cater to non-smokers (or even smokers) then they should create that environment.Â
Â
I don't believe it is the role of the government to protect idiots from themselves.Â
Like I said before,I prefer my water to be clean.Wearing a seatbelt is a matter of life or death.Huge difference. As a non smoker I think it's rude for people to force me to breathe their smoke.Huge difference of not wanting substances in the water. Why not put birth control in the water too?
@Daniel C Don't you think a populous should have a vote on if they should be forcefully "medicated" for their own good? So far the only name calling on this thread is in the first sentence of your post.
@randomdude If you read my comment you will see that I personally don't believe the water should be fluoridated.
>'If found to qualify for the ballot, the earliest Portlanders would be able to vote on the issue would be in May of 2014, which is two months after fluoridation is scheduled to begin, unless a special election is called.'
Â
I would assume that either A) there would be a special election (thanks Portland City Council for the additional expense!) Â or, B) It would be pretty simple to get a court injunction postponing the action until after the vote.Â
Â
...of course, that's assuming that King Sam wouldn't just appeal the injunction and go ahead with his plans irrelevent of the courts position. Don't you minions realize that he only wants whats good for you?Â
Sam has allready thumbed his nose at the Law. He will make this happen on way or another.
If you want to drink fluoride water, they sell it at walgreens, walmart, and rite-aid...there is a whole shelf of it because no one wants the stuff!
Â
In this year's harvard study, they linked fluoride ingestion to lowered IQ's. Â Did you also know that the majority of the studies on the effects of fluoride were done in the 1950's and 1960's here in the US...back when we had a primitive science? Â Check out the studies done in the rest of the world in the last dozen or so years!

Â
Why on earth do we allow this very toxic substance in our drinking water? Â This toxic waste product of the aluminum (and other)industries! Â Sodium fluoride has been banned from drinking water by the more enlightened countries as Sweden, Holland, Finland, France, Germany and Japan; even Britain has suspended it's use.
It was also used as Rat Poison durring the 50's. It accumulates in you're body as a Blood Thinner. Also you CAN NOT boil out floride.
@portlandborn83 According to wikipedia the lethal dose of sodium fluoride for a 70 kg human is 5-10 g.  A tube of Trader Joe's tooth paste is 170 g and contains less than 1% fluoride compounds.  Even if you ate the entire tube whole you would only consume less than 1.7 grams.  Furthermore, Trader Joe's tooth paste contains sodium monoflourophosphate, which is even less toxic.  The lethal dose in rats is estimated to be 0.9 g/kg.  So you could estimate that a 70 kg person would need to consume 63 grams to kill themselves, which is about 40 tubes of tooth paste.  And even furthermore, the amount of fluoride added to water is considerably less than tooth paste.  Besides, you can poison yourself by consuming practically anything, if you consume enough.  Even water will kill you if you consume enough of it.
@Daniel C So why do little kids die every year from consuming toothpaste or atleast getting sent to the hospital then?  It happens all of the time!
Â
I am glad to hear that you are willing to consume a product the accumulates in the body and makes you more docile and lowers your IQ. Â
Â
Plastics are another thing that is promoted as healthy by the american chemical society, but imagine what kinds of things plastics do to our body!
Â
I personally noticed my teeth became stronger after I stopped with the fluoride toothpaste...you should give it a try!
@portlandborn83  @Daniel C It's not the fluoride that kills them, it's eating all the GD toothpaste.  I'm beginning to think that there's something else in the water in Portland that's causing lower than average IQ points in it's citizens.
@portlandborn83 1) kids are stupid and will eat anything if you don't watch them closely.  2) kids weigh less than adults.  3) I don't like plastic and never eat it.  It just tastes bad.
