Kitzhaber has 'interesting evening' up close at Obama's speech
WASHINGTON – Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber watched President Obama’s State of the Union address from a special spot Tuesday evening – from First Lady Michelle Obama’s box, typically reserved for special guests and individuals who may be singled out in the high-profile speech.
Kitzhaber received the invitation to attend just two days before the speech and shared the box with several other people. He sat a few spaces to the left and behind Mrs. Obama.
Contacted in Washington D.C. by KATU News Wednesday morning, Kitzhaber was asked if the tab to the see the speech will fall to taxpayers. Kitzhaber said “well, I’m afraid it does, but I’m making it count. I’m spending the rest of the day here with our congressional delegation and doing some other work on national resource issues that are important to the state.”
Kitzhaber agreed with one of President Obama’s key statements of the night – that no one working full-time making minimum wage should have to live in poverty – in reference to Obama’s call to raise the minimum wage to $9 an hour.
“It’s absolutely true. You know, we’ve got millions of people in this country who are working full time who can barely make it, have no benefits,” he said, but noted that’s not always the case in Oregon, where the minimum wage is already $8.95 an hour. “Minimum wage [in Oregon] is indexed to inflation but the fact is the cost of utilities, the cost of health care, that’s one of the huge problems facing our nation and certainly our state.”
In a tweet before the speech, Washington Post columnist Ezra Klein said the “most interesting guest tonight is John Kitzhaber, Oregon's health care obsessed Gov.” The Post had previously run an extensive article by Sarah Kliff on Oregon’s approach to the changes coming to national and state-level health care programs.
Kitzhaber said that in relation to the Affordable Care Act, commonly called Obamacare, every governor is working to see how best to implement the plan at the state level. “Every governor is struggling with the cost of Medicaid and the prospect of expansion under the Affordable Care Act.”
But Kitzhaber said he thinks Oregon’s approach shows that “it is possible to expand coverage and improve health outcomes at a dramatically lower cost and so I think the [Obama] administration is very interested in being a partner with the state on that.”
On the issue of gun control, Kitzhaber said “I do support universal background checks” but said the “real issue” to him was mental health care. “We also need to adequately invest in mental health services which go hand in hand with many of these tragic events,” he said, referring to recent mass shootings in Connecticut, Colorado and in Oregon.
Outside of the issues, Kitzhaber said he thought meeting David Agnew with the Intergovernmental Affairs office was a highlight and called him a “very interesting person.” Agnew’s official title is Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs.
He said he also met and talked with the “president of Apple” but did not refer to CEO Tim Cook by name. In a still frame from video of the speech, Cook appears to be seated two spots to the right of Kitzhaber.
Apple recently opened a data center in Prineville near where Facebook also has a large data facility.
“It was an interesting evening, certainly,” Kitzhaber said.
Liberals and leaches like to hang together and suck the life's blood from the working class!
Kitzhaber should pay for this trip. All Oregonians don't need him to go to parties. I'm sure he could of viewed the SOTU address on television Just Like some of the Voters in this state.
Being an obozo parrot, Kitzhaber will agree with anything obozo says or does.
Nixon sold jeans to china
Communists keep a tight circle.
There he was, clapping like a seal showing hie support for a liar if anyone bothered to readÂ

The people voted him in. Â Because the number of voters in the Portland area can determine any vote, the rest of the state has to live with their incompetence. Â Portland and other major cities attract the type of people who are looking for a handout because it is easier to get one in the cities. Â The democrats then promise these guys the world in exchange for their votes and guess what? Â Kitz and his kind get elected. Â Maybe the eastern half of the state should cut off all food and electricity to the Willamette Valley, since that's where most of it comes from. Â This ought to get the panhandlers attention and maybe change their voting ways.
The expense of flying our Governor to and from DC. Several nights in an expense DC hotel room. Expensive meals and cab fares. Sure. Why not? It's not like Oregon has a budget problem or anything.
I love the picture KATU. Is that circle jerk?
@I812Â Yup! They are playing the game of spluey as I see it...
Hey, Governor Veto. Â Why don't you just stay in Washington with your liberal buddies? Â That'd be great. Â Â
@Muttley Naaa, he has to make your life miserable by raising your taxes like the good little dog he is...
oooh myyyy. he must have been soooooo star struckÂ
"Itâs absolutely true. You know, weâve got millions of people in this country who are working full time who can barely make it, have no benefits,â he said, but noted thatâs not always the case in Oregon, where the minimum wage is already $8.95 an hour. âMinimum wage [in Oregon] is indexed to inflation but the fact is the cost of utilities, the cost of health care, thatâs one of the huge problems facing our nation and certainly our state.â
Instead of looking for more and better handouts, Kitzhaber, how about addressing the real problem by asking people to accept responsibility for themselves, get better training and/or education, develop a work ethic, and become a contributing member of society? Of course that would require too much effort, now wouldn't it? It is just easier to throw money you collect from those who have chosen to be responsible, self-motivated, and industrious to the slackers.Â
@I812Â I posted agreeing with you and it disappeared...so I will try again. It is our most unproductive workers that got a raise this year. They are the ones who are part time and are always calling in sick. They won't answer their phones when you try to get them to cover a shift. This leaves our most productive workers to cover their shift too. Our system sucks for small business.
@minniemouse Welcome to higher prices whenever you go out and more Out Of Business signs - a very sad state-of-affairs folks voted into power...
@minniemouse @I812 That is the direct result of our society removing all incentive and personal responsibility/accountability by converting what used to be a safety net into a hammock. The majority of minimum wage employees don't care because they know we won't let them fall through the cracks. We have created this situation by mollycoddling everyone. And it is the reason our country is falling so far behind the rest of the world in education, productivity, workforce skills, etc. If you expect nothing (as our society has) you get nothing.
@I812Â Here you go again clouding the issue with facts! What are we going to with you??
My latest op-ed that just went nationwide in case you are interested...

@minniemouse @I812 Then get rid of the unproductive workers.  From what I've heard, many skilled, willing workers are out there looking for jobs.
@Sundowner @minniemouse There are some skilled people out there who are underemployed and unemployed but they are in the minority. The minimum wage is really not intended for those people because they will pull themselves up, one way or the other.
I am going to explain this again for all of you people from the left and or right that think raising minimum wage will help the lower end of the chain.  I operate a business that has 14employees. I pay four of them 35,000 + per year. I pay myself 45,000 per year. The four I pay 35k a year to also get 75 percent of their healthcare paid for. Now the other 10 employees that work for me are either part time or have a job which requires little skill basically entry level. Now every time the wage is taken up for min. wage. I have a decision to make. Cancel raises to the four others that work the most and do 90 percent of the work. Or eliminate one of the entry level paying jobs. So far in the past 3 years I have lowered our staff by 5, as we used to have 20 people. And no it's not because we're slower. We've actually been very flat as far as growth goes. So basically it's helped out a few, but it's also hurt a few. No real advantage.
@Fuelman76 Business owners will either do as you did, Fuelman76, and cut staff or they will up the prices the consumer has to pay. Either way bad for the economy.

Did the First Girl Friend get to go??Â
@KKStJohn No, she was with the First Alternate. ;)
BIG FIZ
Ya gotta love it ... Kitzhaber as window dressing. Too funny!
@I812Â I liked the fact that he got his invite just 2 days before the speach. I guess there was no one left to fill the empty spot. Kind a like being the last one picked for the team at recess. What a tool
@Pvpbw @I812 Exactly!
Good grief, KATU had to circle him so we'd know he was there? We all know what he looks like. As it turned out, he was just another of the liberals in the apparently adoring crowd of acolytes doting on every word from the President. We Oregon taxpayers paid for this trip? Â
@jpk I'm proud to see our Governor there.  Whether we like him or not (I do), any time our State is represented on a national level, it can possibly help in bringing jobs to the area.  Think about that -- sometimes we might not like the players, but if they help a bad situation.  Look at Governor Christie -- he's done nothing but made even the left take notice of his willingness to work for the betterment of his constituents.
@Sundowner @jpk Are you a medical marijuana user? Me thinks so because you are high if you think this will bring any jobs to Oregon.
@Sundowner You're right. With today's education, they need to be told there is a state called Oregon. Unfortunately, Oregon's economy has been in the ditch for much longer than any republican has been in office.Â
@minniemouse Well, it can't hurt.  Do you think companies that relocate to Oregon or expand their businesses in Oregon just fall off trees or learn of the our state via Google?  Any exposure Oregon gets can only be positive unless the exposure is of a bunch of whiners complaining that they always lose when election time rolls around.  How about this thought:  Our economy has been in the ditch since GW ran it there.  We need all the positive visibility we can get.  And no, I don't have a MM card nor would I need one.  The more I read on this forum, the more I'm convinced that those who have no suggestions and offer no ideas are the biggest part of the problem.Â
I thought minimum wage jobs where starter jobs in all my 52 years. Silly me I did not know they are family wage jobs now and so they want to raise how much they pay to match the title.
"Kitzhaber received the invitation to attend just two days before the speech"
Â
I wonder who bailed at the last minute?
 @2012 Hope and ChangeÂ
Clearly someone more important than our governor.
Ah, invited to sit with Ms. Obama. Does that explain some of his odd governance positions? Perhaps a job in the Obama administration is waiting for him?
@Nobody I thought Sam Adams had that all locked up?
@jpk I wouldn't count old Sammy boy out. After all Obama did break up with Ram Emanuel.Â
@Nobody That would be great if it got him out of Oregon...well maybe he could do a lot of damage there to...
Wow - wish I could take my tax money and get a special trip. I wonder how much he racked up in spendy meals at spendy places I'll never get to try. Goes along with Obama's vacations that we pay for and will never the likes see in our lifetime. If Obama cared so much he'd start with cutting his frivolous expenses. Such hypocrisy. And people actually voted for him a second time around.
@djljejm Give it up with the Obama vacation garbage.  You've no doubt been shown statistics regarding GW's "working vacations" that expended over one-third of his terms of office.  If you moaned, groaned, whined, b|tched and complained then, great.  If not, you're just being a partisan hack.
@Sundowner @djljejm You're perfectly right. In fact, after I posted that I realized that I sounded like a hypocrite myself. Neither side is perfect and they all love those perks (who wouldn't?). I just wish they would put their money where their mouths are and show they really care about the commoners.
@Sundowner @djljejm     :)
@djljejm I'm not to proud to say I love it when someone says I'm right!  LOL!
Well for once I find myself agreeing with Kitzhaber. On gun control, universal background checks are a good idea but the real issue that needs to be addressed is mental health care.
Â
As for raising minimum wage to $9 hr., those jobs are usually starter jobs or supplemental, not careers. Between ObamaCare and a minimum wage hike I think were going to see less hiring and more unemployment because many employers, especially small business, won't be able to afford it.
@JohnQ.Public Yep so much for the idea of a starter job...now they want them to be family wage jobs.
@FreedomRocks @JohnQ.Public Good luck raising a family on even $9/hour.
@FreedomRocks @Sundowner @JohnQ.Public "Dumbass liberals" says more about you than those who want to at least make a dent in poverty.  If your skillset is that of a minimum wage worker, there is little if any on-the-job entry-level training that's ever going to bring you to a true "family wage" job.  As a conservative (you, not me), wouldn't you rather have people making something close to decent rather than have them at home collecting welfare?  Think with your head.  Oh, about the typing slower part -- yeah, that's funny. Â
@Sundowner @FreedomRocks @JohnQ.Public I think you totally missed the point so I will type slower....minimum wage jobs where never intended to support a family.
They have always been to take unskilled people and teach them some skills why doing a job so they could move up to family wage jobs if they worked hard.
What the dumbass liberals now want to do is make it so you don't have to improve your skills to move up to a family wage job they want to just keep upping the minimum wage until the two meet. Ya its not there at $9 yet but that is the liberal goal I believe...
@JohnQ.Public  " I think were going to see less hiring and more unemployment because many employers, especially small business, won't be able to afford it"
Not just less hiring, businesses are removing full time employees to part time, to get around the obamacare. So people are going to need the extra dollar an hour to "buy" their own healthcare.
