Oregon gets $10 million early learning grant

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The federal government is giving Oregon an additional $10 million to expand and improve early-childhood education programs.

Gov. John Kitzhaber's office announced the grant on Friday. It's part of the Obama administration's Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge.

Oregon was earlier awarded $20 million for its early learning initiatives, which aim to ensure children are on par with their peers with they reach kindergarten.

Kitzhaber says overcoming early learning challenges is essential to reaching Oregon's educational and economic goals.
