Police, fire unions pull endorsements for Jefferson Smith
PORTLAND, Ore. – After previously endorsing Jefferson Smith in the Portland mayoral race, both the police and fire unions abruptly on Thursday pulled their support for the candidate.
“Our members count on us to make recommendations and, at this point in the campaign, we cannot make a strong recommendation for either candidate,” Portland Police Association president Daryl Turner said in a statement.
The Portland Police Association and Portland Firefighters Association first endorsed Smith in April. At the time, the campaign called it a “potentially game-changing endorsement.”
But the unions apparently reconsidered their support after a series of recent stories recounting a college party in 1993 where Jefferson Smith ended up in an altercation with a woman.
According to a police report written at the time, Smith told officers that he hit a woman who was charging at him. After the story broke, Smith claimed self-defense and apologized for his actions.
The incident has become a major campaign issue since the Willamette Week first broke the story last week.
Alan Ferschweiler, vice president of the firefighters union, said the descision to pull the endorsement was "tough," but said it came down to "a lot of angst about the activity going on."
"Members don't want his name associated with the Portland firefighters at this time," Ferschweiler, said. "That doesn't mean we don't want him to win. We would be honored to work with him, if elected."
"Our commitment to necessary support and improvement to smart public safety remains unwavering," said Henry Kraemer, Smith's campaign manager. "We deeply value the work our front-line city workers do and are grateful for the support they've given us."
"We're obviously disappointed to lose any support, but our strong base of grassroots support will remain our focus during the next 27 days," he added.
Kraemer also said the campaign would also adjust a brand new television commercial touting the support from the police and fire unions.
According to a Survey USA poll conducted for KATU News after the news of the altercation first came to light, Smith's competitor Charlie Hales has a seven point lead. Still, 33 percent of voters said they were undecided.
Full letter sent to members of the Portland Fire Fighters Association:
To the Membership of PFFA,
It is with great consideration that we write to inform you of the decision by Local 43’s Political Committee to withdraw the endorsement of Jefferson Smith for Portland Mayor.
As you have likely seen unfolding in the press recently, there have been numerous events in Mr. Smith’s personal life that raise serious questions about his integrity, honesty, and fitness for office. To be clear, we support Mr. Smith’s platform, and were we looking solely at candidates’ positions on fire fighter issues, the endorsement would stand.
In this situation, however, the candidate’s character clearly runs counter to our values. Quite simply, we do not take lightly the respect we all share as fire fighters in this community and cannot stand alongside someone with questionable ethics and decision-making skills.
Therefore, the Portland Fire Fighters’ Association will not be endorsing a mayoral candidate from this point forward in this race. We wanted you, the membership, to hear that directly from us before it hit the press.
Lastly, we continue to stand proudly with Mary Nolan for City Council. Nolan is a thoroughly vetted, experienced leader and champion of fire fighter and working class issues. Her long track record of advocacy for us at the state level, her ethics, and her ability to lead effectively is strong. As we proceed in this complex political season, all support for Nolan is thoroughly appreciated.
Sincerely,
PFFA Political Committee
Jim Forquer, Alan Ferschweiler, Sean Fogarty
"Decision making skills" I think that says it all. . . a fear reaction to a perceived threat while intoxicated at a young age is one thing. But his "decision making skills while behind the wheel and disregard for public safety combined with the irresponsible lack of "decision making skills" to pay the fines and take his foot off the gas tells me that this guy isn't paying attention. I applaud the unions decision to make a tough decision and rescind their support.
Bravo, again KATU, for your yellow journalism. Â And shame on the police and fire unions for falling for your antics.
I never could understand what difference it made whether or not a union supports a candidate or issue. The bad old days of everyone in the union voting for the candidate or issue that the union supports is long gone, along with the goons that enforce the union directive. People have a free will and will vote for whomever they choose, regardless who the union gives their money to. Â Â
I would think the Portland Police and Fire unions would be increasing their support for Smith. They tend to like hoodlums and thugs, plus the potential payback is huge!
 @I812Â
Â
Yes, they should have a rally like this one:Â http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2009/11/portland_police_support_suspen.html
Â
Why can't Portland Officials elected by the Citizens of Portland control or even discipline the police force or the police individuals who clearly violate bureau policy and established laws?
Â
The Portland Police bureau has been a rogue ship harbored as a garrison in the City of Portland too long. The police force rules the city by threat and intimidation and when they are caught in their violations and crimes the entire force assumes the guilt, obfuscating the facts, poisoning the crime scene, and when caught they appeal under the leadership of the police bureau to avoid any responsibility for their actions. Nothing but bullies, thugs, and crybabies.
Â
Â
@Icarus For decades Portland politicians have sold their soul to the unions representing Portland employees (notice I said employees, not workers). In exchange the unions have received lucrative contracts.Â
Â
The other problem is almost always the department managers and supervisors are former union workers themselves. This breeds a culture of mediocrity where little gets done and nobody is ever held accountable. Have you ever wondered why there are cases after cases of project mismanagement and overspending but everyone still has their job? Have you ever wondered why no one ever loses their job over ineptitude, poor management, or repeated failures?
Â
Most governments are self perpetuating and suffer from cultural problems linked to incestuous (metaphorically speaking) relationships. Portland is among the very worst. Why else would the likes of McCoy continue to keep his job, get raises, and retire in PERS comfort while taking bribes for a decade? Why does it take the FBI to inverstigate McCoy and the Portland Police Department?Â
Â
For Portland politicians it is all about grandstanding and 20-second sound bites. That is why money is misspent, the city's infrastructure is continuing to deteriorate, the city continues to supply drinking water that birds, rodents, and other animals urinate and defecate in, and the streets are falling apart. The city council is more concerned with being "bike friendly" than "business friendly;" more concerned about flouridating the water than making sure it is free of contaminants, and more concerned about plastic bags than safe streets.
Â
Look at the city's debt burden and ridiculous use of "urban renewal district" laws that have mortgages the future for decades to come.
 @I812  @IcarusÂ
Â
Well, I'm not going to drink the entire pitcher of your kool-aid but I sure know that there are big institutional issues with the police force and it compromises the safety and welfare of the city.Â
Â
Fundamentally, the Citizens of Portland will have to DEMAND a change and it will be a huge money saver in the short run. I would love to see a citizen mandated consent decree issued on the Portland Police Bureau demanding a top down External accounting and review of procedures that was publicly transparent and resulted in new transparent procedures that were implemented by mandate and every officer was required to agree or leave and held accountable for their actions.
So the police department is trying to give Jefferson a boost.
How horrid he has been destroyed by something from his past that was long ago resolved and over with. Then there is mammy sammy still at his shenanigans most likely
 @Oh MyÂ
Â
Yeah, it's kinda like he declared bankruptcy 20 years ago...that schyte never goes away...in this case it was judgement/moral bankruptcy.
It doesn't make any difference who becomes mayor. Â The miserable excuse for a city called Portland doesn't deserve a good mayor. Â Heck, you guys couldn't muster enough votes to recall you present weirdo in chief, so what makes you think anyone worthwhile wants the job?
 @boomer What city do you live in?Â
The same union that wants killer cops reinstated? Sounds like a good reason to vote for the guy.
Nice try news goons. Â He's still got my vote.
Portland's #1 mayoral candidate, Tre Arrow, is an open book; he doesn't believe in hiding from his past...like these two clowns with closets full of skeletons...
 @August100 Tre Arrow is an embarrassment to our city. He is the embodiment of all that people despise about hippies.

@August100................he's a terrorist and a coward !
@August100 ......."tre arrow an open book"............more like an open book to mental illness.
I may be a minority here, not really a big supporter of Smith, but I'm more concerned about politico-Hale getting into office. Â
Portland needs a person that is outside the political box. With the media crucifying any candidate they don't support having the courage to run says quite a bit.Â
I'd vote for a person that may be politically clueless but intelligent. Shaking up the Portland goat herd and remember to govern not dictate.
glad you got rid of police union now I will vote for you..All this media hype is brought to you by weiner and his goons they want hale in city hall for their agenda
Soundalike the unions were looking for an excuse to pull their endorsements and they found one.
I'm shocked that KATU didn't search under every rock to find anyone who might have some facts about Sam's love of underage men a few years back. Seems that defending yourself 20 years ago, in the eyes of KATabloidU is a far worse offense than getting it on with an underage person in a public restroom. KATU's transparency is disgusting.
Fireman Randy. The Mayor and the rest of the Goldschmidt toadies are endorsing Hales for more Retread Politicians
Smith is probably going to lose. But it would be funny if he won. One could only imagine how well he would get along as mayor with the police and fire fighter unions after they publically stated they dont endorse him.
 @Dirtman Yeah, that's probably the real story on why their endorsement is being pulled - they can sniff that Smith isn't going to win and they don't want to anger establishment Hales.
 @DirtmanÂ
Â
Kinda the same as if Charlie Hales wins; once one thinks about it, no?
Â
The police/fire endorsement typically predicts the winner of Portland's mayoral race. Perhaps, Charlie will be the mayor to lead the city to finally...at last...secure some control over the police union and reign in their homicidal tendencies and institutionalize some level of control and authority over that bureau of thugs.
I think it's really funny that a police force that kills mentally disabled people, mace someone for voicing their opinion...anyway...I think it odd that they pull their "endorsement" from someone who was a drunk college kid 20 years ago. Can any of us say we're the same people we were 20 years ago??? I'd hate to think we'd all still carry the burdens of things that happened to us in our past. Will Frashour and all the other cops be reminded of what they've done 20 years from now?
Not good. he's going to go out and beat some more women. then drive around with no license going 95 in a 55 zone. what a loser
@ryanmang ......nice name calling,......Stop it !
 @ryanmang Yeah...and you perfect in your 20's??  Give me a break...he was defending himself and those are facts.  This is a non issue and I am pretty disappointed in the Police and Fire unions.....c'mon guys!Â
No, the issue is that he's set a rather curious pattern of poor decisions. From punching a girl 20 years ago to punching another player at a game last year, even if they were "in defense". Oh, and don't forget about the soccer incident, nor about the 7 license suspensions. Where there's smoke......
I fear 5'4" 98 pound women. they attack me all the time.
 @ryanmangÂ
Â
If you were a Portland cop you could shoot them and claim self-defense and still get your pension.
Good job destroying someone over a non-story you media goons!
 @randomdude He's not destroyed.  Not by a long shot.  I have faith that the voters will look past the media's antics and ask some hard questions, such as, who stands to gain by keeping this story going?  But they are absolutely media goons.  This behavior is unacceptable and yellow journalism and it needs to stop.

@Caspertoo @randomdude Because when you are attacked at a party, it is your fault.
