Political produce threats continue in Vancouver
»Play Video
VANCOUVER, Wash. – Some residents say the threatening letters and the barrage of tomatoes at their homes have been happening for a week just because they have campaign signs supporting President Barack Obama's re-election on their property.
The neighbors in the Carter Park neighborhood who didn't get the tomatoes got a letter threatening they'd get them if they put up a pro-Obama sign.
Rebecca Alston found plenty of pretty fresh tomatoes in her front yard Wednesday morning.
"There were about five or six. They were scattered everywhere," she said.
Other residents like Gary Bickford got one of the letters placed on his porch written by a group called the "Welcome Wagon." That group took credit for throwing tomatoes on roofs of homes with Obama signs in the front yard.
"It's pretty cowardly to have a letter put out without a name," he said.
"I got hit because if you read the letter it says anybody with an Obama sign will be targeted," Alston said.
But Alston said they picked on the wrong person.
"I wasn't scared. I was just more irritated and mad. Like how dare they," she said. "It's my right to put whatever I want out here."
Post tomato tossing, she put up two more pro-Obama signs – one in each window – as a big "No thank you" to the Welcome Wagon – whoever they are.
Neighbors gave police the letter Wednesday.
Just two weeks ago, KATU reported on another neighborhood in Clark County seeing the same problem.

Look, I may not like the guy , but I sure wouldn't be trashing a persons property over it, I will use my vote as the ultimate weapon. Throwing tomatoes? and besides any one to support Obama again? well, they really need there head re-examined. Unless they themselves uphold the same values like, Drain Social Security, Lie, change on a whim and such then I understand.but that is what makes this country unique..Every one has a choice. and that is the way it should be, no one should ever interfere wit that right no matter how much we hate or dislike another. That is after all in its self, Tyranny when you try to bully some one else into your way of thinking.
It could just be those pesky Obama hating deer :)

As the right has continued to move further right, this is no surprise. This is what fascists do.Â
 @Old29 Apparently you didn't study your history or sociology lessons very well. Fascists are a type of socialist that believe that businesses should be state controlled and regulated by the government (gee). Fascists seek to unify their base in solidarity by creating class conflict (sound familiar?) Historically, fascists have secured their power by providing cradle-to-grave social assistance to the population. Like other forms of socialism, fascism only works if everybody participates, so objection is denounced and non-participation is punished. The liberal left in America are far, far closer to being fascists than the right ever dreamed of. You people scare me, because you are intent of forcing your failed economic theory on us. The cool thing about capitalism, we really don't care if you participate or not. We prefer you do, but it hurts you more than us if you don't.
@Old29 Really???? take a look at some of the liberals like CAPTMAC11 .I dont think you know what a facist is....Hitler ,musillini, Saddam, those guys were facist.
After reading the headline, I thought they were going to report on produce protesting high prices. I could visualize activist green peppers and tomatos marching, or rolling, around supermarkets carrying little signs stuck in them, rather than those icky little stickers identifying their heritage in several languages. Oh well, on to some more coffee...my cup is empty.Â
Why vote for Robama or Romney...both are pretty much the same person, right? They are both controlled by the same special interests!
@portlandborn83 Obama is doing what George Soros wants him to do. Good Article:

Â
exerpt:Â Â Â Â Soros is a planetary parasite. His grasp, greed, and gluttony have a global reach. But what about America? Soros told Australia âs national newspaper âThe Australian.â â America, as the centre of the globalised financial markets, was sucking up the savings of the world. This is now over. The game is out,â he said, adding that the time has come for âa very serious adjustmentâ in Americanâs consumption habits. He implied that he was the one with the power to bring this about.â
Â
Soros: âWorld financial crisis was âstimulatingâ and âin a way, the culmination of my lifeâs work.â
Obama has recently promised 10 billion of our tax dollars to Brazil , in order to give them a leg-up in expanding their offshore oil fields. Obamaâs largesse towards Brazil came shortly after his political financial backer, George Soros, invested heavily in Brazilian oil (Pet rob ras).
Â
Tait Trussel writes, âThe Pet rob ras loan may be a windfall for Soros and Brazil , but it is a bad deal for the U. S. The American Petroleum Institute estimates that oil exploration in the US could create 160,000 new, well-paying jobs, as well as $1.7 trillion in revenues to federal, state, and local governments, all while fostering greater energy security and independence.â
Â
 @portlandborn83 Aren't all politicians?
Marinara, anyone?
As an Obama fan myself, I think this is absolutely hilarious! It makes me want to put a sign up at my house and see if I can collect any tomatoes.
Wow. This type of behavior is usually reserved for the left. It is very surprising.
Â
On a deeper note it shows just how divided we are as a country. It is not getting better and will only get worse. I am not sure that we will be able to pull out of this and it could lead to civil war in which case the right would win because they believe in the 2nd amendment and take full advantage of it.
Â
A nation divided cannot stand. So true.
 @RalphCramden I'm on record that I think we're more divided than any time in history, including 1860. The only reason it hasn't gone sideways like it did in 1860 is that the divide isn't geographic.Â
@RalphCramden How about liberal CWP holder gun enthusiasts like myself? What if I'm not interested in participating in a civil war? How are conervatives going to visually identify as the enemy?
 @noneofyourbizznessÂ
Â
If they want to "share" what we have but don't want to work for it.
 @RalphCramden The "nation divided that cannot stand" managed to survive a four year war in which the modern equivalent of 7 million of its citizens were lost.  We survived 10 years where nearly 1 in 4 had no job.  If prognostication from the past is as accurate as you say, I wouldn't bet against the US.  @danoseknows That was the very first thing I thought of. It is actually quite common.
 @HenryBowman  @danoseknows Indeed. During the Bush/Kerry contest there was a liberal keying cars in Seattle to make it look like republicans were being destructive.
 @danoseknowsÂ
You are not a loon. History is full of situations like you describe. At the street level I doubt that is happening but it very well could be.
Â
During both the Nazi era and the communist Russia era there were political assassinations done by the Nazi's and communists against folks on "their own" side. It was done for two reasons . The person, while part of the movement, was a problem that needed to be dealt with and getting rid of them and blaming the opposition was a win win for them.
Â
There is a saying, the end justifies the means and it is as true today as it was centuries ago.
 @RalphCramdenÂ
Â
We will. We have become divided in the past but come back together.
Â
Think of pre-war. The nation was heavily divided. We fought each other over going to war, the bad economy and who was at fault (familiar?).
Â
We came together for WWII.
Â
Then we had the 60's. We were divided again. We had revenue issues and a shrinking employment opportunities, it was young idealists verses older pragmatists.
Â
We came back again.
Â
That was just this century. Our nation being free means we have the problems of getting polarized, and sometimes creepily homogenized. No one condition is permanent.
Â
That too shall pass
Â
:)
Â
 @RepomanÂ
Â
This time it is different. The US will fail financially and there will be a huge struggle to see who is in control when the dust settles. I expect a total breakdown in society with riots and lots of violence as the entitlement society creates havoc because the government is not taking care of them.
 @RalphCramden  @Repoman Ralph, did you forget to turn on the air exchange in the bunker again?
 @danoseknowsÂ
Â
When there are 47% of the population that don't pay taxes that means that more than likely they are a high percentage on the public dole.
Â
Once that money runs out they will not be happy and will riot in the streets.
 @RalphCramdenÂ
Â
Ooh, carful there Ralf, you might start sounding progressive LOL
Â
Â
 @RepomanÂ
"Predicting the future can be accomplished by looking at the past with a high degree of accuracy." RalphCramden
Â
History shows over and over that we never learn and therefore don't evolve. If we did evolve we wouldn't make the same mistakes over and over and over....
 @RalphCramdenÂ
Â
Looks like it's all about how full you think the glass is at this point.
Â
Prognostication at this point is just guessing.
Â
"Rebecca Alston found plenty of pretty fresh tomatoes in her front yard Wednesday morning."
Â
Man if you're going to throw vegetables, make them rotten.
Â
What a waste of good food.
Â
No bumper stickers either... You just make yourself a target and no one cares about your political affiliations enough to change their vote.
Â
If you need to tell the world about you and your thoughts, be prepared for people who disagree and don't have the communication skills to do it nicely.
Vandalizing private property is not free speech. Grow up.
@ecb It is what it is. right or wrong. If a group of occupiers can tear up parks in the name of free speech and houses can be stolen in the name of free speech( all of which happens in portland so i guess thats ok) , then you can get hit with tomatoes. Again , free speech is free speech, but be prepared for the consequences if someone does not like it.
The moral of this story is don't plant political posters up in your yard. Democrat or Republican. While it is free speech , it can draw other forms of free speech along with it. It is best to save the political views for the voting booth. But then again this story is not from Vancouver , it is from the great liberal state of Portland where if you are not for The Obaminator ot the Kitzclubber you are wrong and evil for not following the cult........
 @Civ True, it is free speech. What people need to remember is free speech is not a get out of jail free card. If you break the law, whether exercising free speech or not, you have still broken the law. Whats pathetic is that the police often ignore this and when they do something about it they are often sued. Pathetic situation.
@Civ I don't consider people who I don't see eye to eye with to be evil.I find groups like the KKK or Westboro Baptist Church and the black panthers to be evil.
@Civ I have a huge HOPE for CHANGE on my car.  I challenge anyone to touch it!  They will be making a big mistake.Â
This isnt news. Â It is just a biased report supporting obama.....What about all the people harrassed in portland for showing Romney signs.
 @sortbait there aren't any.
@arnold @sortbait          There is in MY YARD! Â
 @MrAchilles  @arnold Mine too but thankfully, I don't live in Portland.
The hypocracy is too much. The party displaying the Gadsen Flag (Don't tread on me) like to tread on other peoples' rights. The party of private property rights will tread on others' private property use. The party of second amendment rights attack those using their first amendment rights.
We need to bring more civilty back to our communities and maybe we should start with a basic civics class.
@WendyTeagarden You want civility , stay out of politics . If you are a Democrat stay in Portland where you are "safe" from the hypocracy of the rest of the world...
Throwing tomatoes is as American as apple pie. Heck, it's practically free speech. When they start putting rocks or Molotov cocktails through your window, then I think we have a news story.

Â
Yep, I do. I was just looking for the most entertaining video about tomato throwing.Â
Regardless of a person's political views this type of behavior is shameful and cowardly.
Sooo, the tomatoes were just laying there like easter eggs in the yard? Oh how horrible, they must have been devastated by that threat. This story just sounds off. If someone threatens you with tomatoes, they don't usually just scatter them in your yard. This sounds like a bogus story.
It is the Liberal Media of course it is made up.. Bunch a whinny babies.Â
 @Kachina ~  Yes, I wondered about that, too, Kachina...  Usually, if people are throwing tomatoes, you see the tomatoes splattered all over walls, cars, fences, doors, and so on... not just parked quietly in yards..!   Not saying it's OK to throw tomatoes (or anything else) at other people or their property, but this story is just a little bit strange..!
Â
I've seen VERY few political yard-signs this year here in Salem...it's kind of nice, actually... Â In '08, they were all over the place, but this year? Â The only signs I see are for local candidates running in local races... Â
Â
In re this particular story, Ms Aston needs to re-hang her American flag a little higher so it's not dragging on the ground... Â
I'd bet my lunch money that for every one person getting picked on in the burbs with a B HO sign, there are ten folks in Portland getting their Romney signs stolen or vandilized.

@danoseknows Maybe add some request signs to the yard of what to throw next. lol
Well this is just ridiculous, way backwards and bullying at the level of 7th graders. Back in Austin TX folks had all kinds of bumper stickers on their cars from atheists to the KKK to Bible-thumpin' churches to pro-choice to gay rights and of course political candidates of every stripe and no one tried to squash others' freedom of speech (mind you this was Austin...but still, it *was* Texas) so why does anyone think they can do this in Vancouver WA?
Anecdotally, this draws to mind that there was one town somewhere else where someone had a Star of David in their window one Hannukah and their window got smashed by a brick thrown through it. When the neighbors found out, the next couple of nights every window in the neighborhood and beyond had Star of David in it to show solidarity of freedom of religion/speech/expression. Maybe this neighborhood can plaster Obama AND Romney signs doubled in yards all over the neighborhood in a blitz to show that they won't be bullied and that they support their neighbors freedom of speech and expression.
