Poll: Hales increases lead over Smith in Portland mayor race

PORTLAND, Ore. – A new poll shows Charlie Hales leads the race for Portland mayor over Jefferson Smith one month before the election.
According to a Survey USA poll conducted exclusively for KATU News, 37 percent of voters polled said they would vote for Hales if the election were held today, while 30 percent said they would elect Smith.
"Well it's certainly progress and progress is something we're happy to have," Hales said. "But obviously thousands of people are still making up their minds and we want to let them know that I'm the guy that can get things done."
The poll shows each candidate has plenty of room for movement with 33 percent of voters undecided. Members of both campaigns said they plan to start airing campaign ads on TV soon.
"With a third of voters undecided and a polling firm that had us way down, almost throughout the primary, what this should tell anybody who looks at it is first of all, let's not fixate on polls," Smith said.
Voters were polled nearly one week after revelations that Smith was involved in a fight with a woman when he was a college student at the University of Oregon in 1993. Smith said during a news conference on Oct. 1 that he struck a woman at a college party, although he claims he acted in self-defense.
The altercation was first reported by Willamette Week.
The poll was, however, conducted before Willamette Week and The Oregonian first reported the existence of the 1993 police report that said Smith told Eugene police that he struck the woman with his fist.
Survey USA found Smith's support among Republicans has eroded. In an identical Survey USA poll conducted three weeks ago for KATU News, Smith trailed Hales 34 percent to 30 percent among Republican voters.
In Wednesday’s poll, Hales’ lead among Republicans has increased to 25 points; 42 percent to 17 percent for Smith.
Hales also increased his lead among voters over 50. He led 47 percent to 30 percent in the poll conducted three weeks ago and now leads 52 percent to 27 percent.
There is a bright spot for Smith: Younger voters between the ages of 18 to 34.
They account for nearly a third of all likely voters, and they are overwhelmingly choosing Smith. And even better news for Smith, knowing he needs to make up ground, nearly half of younger voters say they're undecided.
Wednesday’s poll has a margin of error of +/- 4.4 percent.
The candidates' campaign websites:
Voters divided on fluoridation, but want issue on ballot
Voters remain divided on the issue of Portland water fluoridation. 47 percent said fluoride should not be added to the city’s drinking water, while 46 percent said it should. Eight percent said they were not sure.
The poll’s margin of error was +/-4.1 percent.
The overall results are nearly the same as a poll conducted by Survey USA for KATU News three weeks ago, although men and women have switched positions on the issue.
Men had opposed fluoridation, but now support it by a 51 percent to 44 percent margin. Women had supported fluoride, but now oppose it by a 50 percent to 41 percent margin.
Voters age 18-34 overwhelmingly oppose fluoridation while most voters age 35 and older support it.
Regardless of whether voters support fluoridation or not, the poll shows they believe voters should have the final say on the issue.
77 percent of voters said a decision should be made by Portland voters, while 20 percent said the Portland City Council should decide the issue.
Little movement in Portland ballot measures
On the Portland arts tax measure, 21 percent of voters said they were certain to vote yes and 22 percent were certain to vote no. 58 percent of voters polled were undecided.
The measure would create a $35 annual income tax to fund the arts and arts education.
The poll has a margin of error of +/- 4.4 percent.
The Portland School District bond measure is not as close. 42 percent of polled voters said they support the measure, which would issue up to $482 million in bonds to improve Portland schools.
24 percent of voters said they do not support the measure. 34 percent said they were undecided.
The poll has a margin of error of +/- 4.4 percent.
The Multnomah County Library taxing district creation measure, which would create a dedicated fund for county libraries, maintained nearly a two to one lead.
41 percent of voters support the measure, while 20 percent do not. 39 percent said they were uncertain.
The poll has a +/- 3.8 percent margin of error.
It appears to me the media want to see Charlie win, hence, with that notion it makes me lean towards Jefferson Smith,, I just need to read more about both..
Ted Kulongoski endorsed him, so he's the best candidate PERS money can buy.
If Hales had any integrity, he'd stick with the issues, instead of being strangely quiet while this annihilation of Smith was being done for him by the media. Why don't you get involved in this unending attack on Smith? Are you secretly smiling, Mr Hales?
After 4 years of a major panderer (Adams) in the office, I am going to vote for someone who is not afraid to bit ch slap (Smith).
Y-A-W-N!!!
At this point, the carnage the media has created has effectively turned the race over to Hales.Â
Â
I don't presume to know if one or the other is more qualified, nor do I have a personal stake one way or the other. But the pattern of behaviors that has been reported in the media have left voters with so much doubt about his charictor that he's go no chance at this point.Â
@MarkKpic You nailed it. The media has promoted more bad publicity about Smith than Hales. Unfortunately the only thought the programmable public will have is who "not" to vote for.
Whoever wrote this story didn't read the first part of the poll, because the story is wrong. Â The poll clearly says it was conducted 10/7-10/9. Â Willamette Week posted their story about the police report at about 7:25 p.m. on 10/8, and the Oregonian almost immediately after (side note -- timed for maximum impact right at the end of the Monday night televised debate. Â How do I know it was timed? Â Because Willamette Week reporter Nigel Jaquiss was sitting in the back row of Lincoln Hall at the debate -- not at his office scrambling to get the story out.) Â So the survey DOES include responses AFTER that story was out. Â This is just more mainstream media spin worked by the powers that be against Smith. Â They can't even do a report on a poll without injecting bias.
No kidding? With all the recent harping by the media about Smith, did anyone think the poll would show him ahead? Doesn't Hales also have stuff hidden in his closet? After all, he is older than Smith so should also have done stupid stuff in his past.

Doing your work for you.
If what someone did 20 years ago is so important to you then run with this story .
This is much bigger than a measley slap to a woman, this is a slap to EVERY American.
Portland's #1 mayoral candidate Tre Arrow, is way more qualified than these two clowns.....
@August100 Arrow is a convicted felon and a terrorist  . unless you are him and trying to bolster you case, you are looking and sounding very stupid( unless you are being sarcastic , then I give you a thumbs up).
@Civ scratch my last comment, August100 posted on another post and I realized he needs mental help after reading it
@Civ  @Civ "Convicted Felon" & "Terrorist" are very subjective terms....
So I'm hoping the other 33% are booking moving vans. Seems like a fairly easy choice although I am really wishing that Jefferson wins, The potential for 4 years of a rolling comedy show is just too much to pass up.
The fact that neither candidate is anywhere close to 50% is indicative of the lack of quality candidates and lack of confidence in either one by the voters. A sad commentary indeed.
Wow , you would almost think that Smith is a Republican with the amount of bashing he is getting for a 20 year old event.
katu how much do you spend on these polls..Donate the money to the food bank that you spend on this. Do your job which is to report the news......
@poodlem KATU would be better off using the money to send their employees back to school so they could learn to write and learn the lost art of journalism.
Smith has an excuse, a reason, for every infraction we've found out about...can't help but wonder how many more we don't know about... and I'd bet you they are out there just lurking, waiting to be tossed into the pile.  In the beginning of all this I was willing to to give him the benefit of the doubt until the numbers continued to mount...not at all what we need in a person in public office where we need a cool head and responsible attention to details where our everyday lives are affected by by actions taken...just look at the mess Adams has created, from sewer, bikes, garbage pickup...the list goes on.  We do not need to take a chance Smith would have our best interest at heart...
Â
@KHEB ANY candidate is a crap shoot at best. If the candidates were smart, they'd take half the money the raise and put it up for a raffle...each vote gets a ticket. If their candidate wins, whoever gets their ticket drawn splits the cash with the winner. At least someone would go away happy.
The more stuff changes, the more it stays the same....
Â
So glad I don't live in Portland.
Who cares what he did in college. People need to start picking candidates based on real issues, and worry about their own morals.Â
@Rae0224 I don't care what he did while drunk in college...I did some really stupid stuff in the same condition. What I do care about is his complete inablility to manage his own life as a 40 year old man. He is not capable of running a city if he cannot keep his temper in check and maintain a drivers license (anyone can get and keep a drivers license....anyone!)
@Rae0224 Here here.... How many more people have to come out and say it was self defense before we stop hearing this noise...Â
 @MeatSnak  @Rae0224 Hear hear!
Â
What?
Smith could actually be a bigger disaster than Adams....unbleievable
Â
 @oh4FS Thats impossible!Â
@MeatSnak I sure hope he doesn't get a chance to prove me right. Even if you don't want to vote for Hales...you have to vote against Smith!  The guy is a walking clone of Adams...but with even more personal accountability issues....hard to believe but true.
