Rob Saxton appointed to key Ore. education post

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber has appointed Rob Saxton as deputy superintendent of public instruction, a position in which he will head the state Department of Education.

Saxton has been the superintendent of the Tigard-Tualatin School District for the past seven years.

Kitzhaber said Thursday that Saxton's experience and excellent track record in Tigard-Tualatin made him the ideal candidate.

Saxton is the Kitzhaber's second key education appointment in six weeks, following the choice of Rudy Crew to become the state's first chief education officer.

The Legislature created the two positions as part of an effort to streamline the education system.

They are responsible for ensuring that by 2025, all Oregon students graduate from high school and 80 percent of them go on to attain a two- or four-year college degree.
