MONMOUTH, Ore. (AP) — Gov. John Kitzhaber is appointing his predecessor, Ted Kulongoski, to the newly created board of trustees for Western Oregon University.

Kitzhaber's office announced the appointment on Monday.

Kulongoski, a Democrat, was governor from 2003 to 2011. He's one of 15 people appointed to the Western Oregon board.

Kitzhaber also nominated new governing boards for Eastern Oregon, Southern Oregon, and the Oregon Institute of Technology.

State lawmakers voted last year to give the universities more individual control, diminishing the power of the statewide chancellor's office.

Kulongoski and all of the nearly 130 other people appointed to various boards and commissions are subject to confirmation by the state Senate next month.
