Governor strikes 30-year deal with Nike

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Gov. John Kitzhaber and athletic-wear giant Nike Inc. agreed Wednesday to a 30-year deal that promises Nike will only be taxed on its in-state sales.
Nike requested the deal while it plans a $150 million expansion and 500 or more jobs.
Nike told the state it would only pledge to expand if the so-called "single sales factor" tax benefit remains in place, a calculation favorable to the global apparel giant. The guarantee means Nike won't later be taxed on its payroll expenses if it hires hundreds more workers.
"We appreciate Gov. Kitzhaber's leadership and the Oregon Legislature's support," said Nike CEO Mark Parker. "Our roots are here in Oregon, and over the last 40 years we've grown from a small company to a global one connecting with consumers in markets all around the world."
State lawmakers approved legislation authorizing the deal during a special session Friday.
Oregon calculates taxes for multistate corporations based only on the company's in-state sales, something Nike wanted to ensure would continue.
It was unclear whether Nike would have actually moved to expand outside of Oregon — a company spokeswoman refused to say — but the mere threat was enough to prompt action.
Nike has deep roots in Oregon, where it was created in the 1960s by a former middle-distance runner and his college track coach. Together, Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman built the company into one of the globe's most influential brands.
Knight also is the largest contributor to University of Oregon athletics, and his money is considered a key factor in vaulting the school's football program into national prominence.
Nike said in its agreement with the state that it began work on the expansion Jan. 1.
I thought Democrats hated Republicans for this kind of thing. Someone set me straight.
 @Kaaarl Maybe it was just jealousy?
Should governors or mayors be allowed to contract with anyone past their time in office? i think they should not. Â they can really screw the people by long term contracts.
 @32jim2 Or a least not as long as 30 years. Maybe 10 years at most.
Yes, sir. How high should I jump, sir?
I think its safe to say the good Dr. ReRun has lined up a pile of cash for his next election........
So... Another shady backroom deal that ensures the safety of a to big to fail company. Â Yeah, cause here in Oregon, we are all about the small businessman......
Â
Meanwhile, Â those "donations" or "gifts" Â were just a small investment to gain greater political favor. Â Otherwise, 500 jobs wouldn't be worth snubbing every single other business in Oregon. Â
Â
Screw Nike. Â Watch, most of the employment will probably come from out of state or transferred from other Nike facilites. Â Those employed in-state will probably be hired just for menial labor. Â 500 jobs for a 30 year tax avoidance deal? Â Garbage.
Â
Â
Of those 500+ jobs, how many are minimum wage?
 @JohnQ.Public Better yet, how many are through employment agencies ? No hope at all..
This is what Intel does, they don't hire anyone, just temps..
For shame. The last thing Nike needs is a tax break. Yeah, sure, they hire the people, but the don't pay the taxes that provide the services the people need. So school years get shortened, potholes don't get fixed, etc. Has anyone SEEN the Nike campus? It is nothing short of opulent.
Will create 500 jobs. Any language about maintaining them?? Could the gov asked for more employment?
"Oregon calculates taxes for multistate corporations based only on the company's in-state sales, something Nike wanted to ensure would continue."
Â
All this is saying, is that Nike is asking for reassurance that this will remain the case in the future. Not changing anything, just providing reassurance. Sounds pretty simple for me.
 @pdxd Obama *wants* corporations to "pay their fair share" in taxes.  This is Nike getting out of "paying their fair share", before Obama can make that happen.  Since this will continue their original tax cuts, they won't have to "pay their fair share" for at least 30 years.  Nice, huh?
So,,, Nike won't be paying their fair share?
 @oodathunked Hey! This is a no hypocrite zone here ! The Oregon majority populace areas demand that you follow their lines of thought.
John, John, John, John, John. Where do we start? We are really getting tired of the double speak out of your mouth! You can't have it both ways. Running a state takes more than just saying that you will tax everyone to enhance the school system. You need to follow up with the corporations as well. The least you should have said that Nike would have to pay taxes on in-state sales, PLUS 10%. Add a little boost there, buddy!
Free from socialist utopia ideologies. Only if DC would see the benefits of such an a** kissing.
Sing this to "Danny boy":
"Oh Johnny Boy, Oh' Phil, Oh Phil, is bloowin....
From Beaverton to Salem it's so green.....
You'll get chance to work for him on someday...
But just for now you stuck up our (fill in word).....
Â
Nice job guys. 30 years! Give Phil and his minnions the key to the City of Salem, ya sold the rest of the state out!
Hopefully someone will sue because more than likely this is an illegal agreement.
Â
What would be really cool is if Nike built a new facility and this agreement was over turned in the courts. Then Nike would be stuck. I like that idea.
Â
@RalphCramden  I believe it is legal because technically the deal is valid for any company that meets certian criteria....... but from a practical sense, the conditions are so narrow that its essentially a deal for Nike
Â
Â
How appropriate...... Salem is offically bought and paid for by Nike
Â

Â
So now Nike owns Beaverton, Salem and Eugene.
Â
Wonder what city will be next.......
 @kramr Whose says they're planning on another city? Why not take the whole state in one swoop?
I think I'll only pay taxes on things that I bought that were made in Oregon.. how about that. Â I'm glad we can just decide whatever we want! Â
@A74R1 So,,, your gonna buy them in Washington?
I'll try this again. Obama wants to tax rich people. Kitzhaber, the same tax and spend politician, wants to reduce taxes on rich corporations. Does anyone else see the hypocrisy and lunacy ?
 @Rob C 503 ~ Well, nobody ever said that politics - or politicians - made sense..!  :-)
 @margay1  @Rob C 503 or cents!
@washcomom ......good one !
@margay1 .........ain't that the truth, margay !!
