Oregon Democrats select first lesbian House speaker

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Oregon House Democrats voted Thursday to make Rep. Tina Kotek of Portland the nation's first openly lesbian woman to lead a state legislative chamber, another milestone from an election that brought a series of victories to the gay community.
Kotek as House speaker is almost a certainty, but her speakership still has to be formally ratified in January.
With the selection of Kotek, openly gay leaders will control the House or Senate in five of the 50 states — more than ever before, and up from two before last week's election, according to the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund.
"For many years we were building a bench of openly gay officials who could step into those roles, and now we're seeing that around the country," said Denis Dison, a spokesman for the Victory Fund, a national group that helps gay candidates get elected to offices at all levels.
The organization backed 180 candidates this year, and 122 of them won, Dison said.
Kotek said she didn't set out to break barriers but is honored to represent the gay community. It's important for the gay community to have role models in leadership positions, she said.
"We all look for people out there who look like us," she said.
"I have had emails and text messages from people who are very excited," Kotek said. "I think any time you have a 'first' it's an important thing for the community."
Kotek has represented a liberal district in the heart of Portland since 2007. She became the No. 2 leader in the Oregon House in 2011 after convincing her Democratic colleagues to oust her predecessor following a legislative session that left many of them frustrated by Republican successes. She oversaw campaign efforts that helped her party pick up four House seats and grab the majority last week.
Kotek ran unopposed for speaker, and her colleagues selected her for the job in a closed-door meeting Thursday evening. She won't formally take over as speaker until the new Legislature convenes in January.
"Now the real work begins," Kotek said in a statement after the vote. "Oregon continues to face many serious challenges, and the public is counting on us to tackle them head on."
Once they all take office next year, five states will have openly gay leaders at the helm of the House or Senate.
In Washington, Ed Murray was chosen by his Democratic colleagues Tuesday to be Senate majority leader, the top job. Colorado Democrats last week nominated Mark Ferrandino to be House speaker.
John Perez in California and Gordon Fox in Rhode Island have led the lower chambers in their states since 2010.
Oregon House Democrats also selected Rep. Val Hoyle, D-West Eugene, to be House majority leader as well as Rep. Chris Garrett, D-Lake Oswego, as speaker pro tempore, Rep. Tobias Read, D-Beaverton, as majority whip, Rep. Jules Bailey as deputy majority whip and Rep. Michael Dembrow, D-Portland, and Rep. Betty Komp, D-Woodburn, as assistant majority leaders.
Last week House Republicans elected Rep. Mike McLane of Powell Butte to be House minority leader.
The House had an even number of Republicans and Democrats during the last two sessions. But after the election earlier this month, Democrats retook four seats and became the majority in the House, 34-26.

This world is going to HE**!!! And especially this state!!
Most of us have outgrown the 'Mullet' hair style. Isn't it about time gay's outgrow the Opie Taylor style? You keep pushing the 'times are changing'Â mantra, so lets change that hair cut too.
@last boyscout What would you suggest? Frankly I only care about my own hair or lack thereof.
Wasn't this same story run about a week ago? why does the media keep reminding us that this woman is a lesbian? KATU it's obvious this woman is a lesbian... what of it? Does this mean she's going to do an excellent job? Or are we going to be deluged with excuses that because she is a lesbian she wasn't given a real chance to do her job?
 The fact that she is a lesbian isn't the strike against her, but rather the fact that she is a politician is why I don't trust her ability.
 Because someone is a homosexual doesn't mean that they are qualified to perform a job.
As a politician she can be trusted for her good judgement. Just look at her judgement choices. Everybody should feel comfortable trusting this person with the running of our state.
Â
Is it any wonder that our state is in the mess that it is in?
Politicians can't figure out why the public trusts used care salesmen more than the politicians. It is obvious to me. The used care salesmen have earned their respect.
 @Freedom1267 What "judgement choices" are you refering to?
 @badcat Do your own home work!
I h8 manh8ers.
 @JouThePlumber Does being a lesbian automatically make a woman a man hater?
It makes them a God-hater... and He is THE MAN!!!!
"Now the real work begins," Kotek said in a statement after the vote. "Oregon continues to face many serious challenges, and the public is counting on us to tackle them head on."Â
Â
Indeed we do, Rep Kotek. Thankfully, Rep Kotek has her focus where it needs to be.Â
Â
While sensationalistic headlines may do wonders for ratings and media share, they do very little for the overall function of the body she has been elected in which to serve.Â
Â
Irrelevent of her sexual orientation, she does have a job to do. Rather than celebrating her election, lets see how her and her cohorts do this term before handing out congratulations? Basically, I'm waiting to see if she is an EFFECTIVE leader. Frankly I could care less that she is a lesbian leader.Â
 @MarkKpic Ya I for one am a little confused about what her sex life has to do with anything?
Â
We don't celebrate every time we elect a pervert, straight, or someone who likes to play pony or some other kinky thing.
Â
Why can't we just be happy we elected someone to do a good job and fix our state and leave their sex life out of it?
Â
I for one think every other person I meet has to be gay after all since it is that way on TV shows these days it must be that way in real life....
So I guess I can look at her and say to myself, "she was elected to this position because of her status as a lesbian, not because she is smart and intelligent and more than adequate."
Â
When I look at minority government workers I think this all the time. Every now and then I am impressed and think that the government got a good deal. They got a minority who is also intelligent and more than qualified for the job. Most of the time it is clear that they were only hired for their minority status.
That's just because you're a racist. At least you're able to admit it.
 @badcatÂ
Well thank you. I wasn't sure what it was called and now I know.
 @badcat How odd you would say something like that. I saw no racism in Freedoms post. I think you were just looking to use the time worn liberal phrase of "racist" just because you haven't used that word for awhile. I notice that you so called intellectuals seem to use that phrase a lot when you have no argument to offer.
@Razor1Â I was responding to Ralph, who is most certainly racist.
 @RalphCramden It does make it hard to take the person seriously when the media is more concerned about who she has sex with then how qualified she is for the job...No wonder our country is going down the toilet....
Why is it dressed like a man....Maybe it is a man.
 @sortbait Why is that relevant?
Leads one to believe  that the old expression of "being called on the carpet" will take on a whole different meaning now.Â
The media and the left are such hypocrites. They encourage us to be a "color blind society" and how we should all be treated the same and yet they are the very ones that continually bring up these differences and ask for special legislation and treatment. Perhaps if we would stop bringing it up all the time and stop talking about this supposed non-issue, we really could become a society that focuses less on appearance and more on character?
 @Scotty9 They think the more the advertise it the more we all will like it...
Who cares what she is. She was selected to do a job. She can't do the job, then out the door she goes. I don't know what possessed KATU and others to bring up her sexuality. Does that make her special? Nope. Do the people of Oregon really care? Nope. Who cares?  Really, who cares?
@theobserver I CARE!!! Because no God-hater whould ever be in a position of power, and no woman should be, either! Blatant disregard of God's laws will ALWAYS cause judgment to fall, whether now or later!
Â
I was the first white hetrosexual male to jump rope on a roof top....no news on me..... what gives?
 @katufanman From what I read on media and what I see on TV likely are the only white hetro male on the planet:)
One has nothing to do with the other. Slow news day? I need not know this information. None of my business, and has nothing to do with the position.
I find it interesting that her sexual orientation doesn't matter as long as she doesn't want to marry her partner.Then all of a sudden her sexuality is a huge issue.It also becomes a huge issue when it comes to the folks that feel the need to dictate other people what kind of legal arraignments they choose to enter into.I wish the religious and or right wingers took on the same attitude that it *doesnt matter" when it comes to the private lives of the LGBT community
If she had a family reunion, would it be called "The Koteks Get Together"?
So now we're choosing whether or not our politicians are qualified for the job by what their sexual preferences are?
Thanks for pointing that out. To think I wasted all that time considering the actual Issues...
I've said it before and I'll say it iagain. It's not usually the gays that are making a big deal of their sexual preferences, it's the damn media that keeps bringing it up.
Think this woman called a press conference to announce to everyone that she's gay and is now speaker of the house?
I have a feeling that she'd far rather this headline say only, "Tina Kotek Voted By Peers to be House Speaker" because that is what's important, here - not who she sleeps with.
So media - knock it off, dammit!
 @catherine.henry They are trying to convince us all to like and accept it. The more the media and TV shove it in your face the more you are likely to start accepting it and they know that so it is a this effort on their part not just by accident...
 @catherine.henry Sorry dragon is off today that was supposed to say it's a conscious effort on their part...
 @catherine.henry well said!
 @catherine.henry AMEN!!!
Why yes - let's not care about her work product, her life experience, her qualifications, her education...
Â
SHE SLEEPS WITH WOMENÂ - THEREFOREÂ SHE IS *WONDRFUL*!
Â
That about cover it K2?
when can we have an "openly straight" person be recognized? Â Oh yeah, they don't need it, right? Â Well, how about I don't wanna know who you're bangin
I look forward to the day when we can look at a lesbian in congress, and not think to ourselves "that women likes to sleep with other women," Â but "I bet that person could help me fix my house."
 @UtterReality Exactly! It shouldn't matter what a person's sexual orientation is. What should matter is if they are qualified to do the job.
 @UtterReality  I can't wait for the day when I can look at a congressman or woman and think, "I bet that person doesn't come up with any more stupid legislation that takes more of my freedoms away or costs me more money for stupid programs."
Â
I'm not holding my breath.
 @UtterReality or my diesel engine
all gay's will burn in hell just like all did in Sodom and Gamora... very true
 @becky And you believe that because a book told you so? Have you considered reading other books?
@becky Judge not, lest ye be judged. Get off your high moral horse and give it a rest.
@becky That's real Christian of you.
@becky No one has ever brought back tangible proof that hell exists, only their own visions or imaginations. The concept of hell has been used for centuries as a fear motivator.Commit sin A. and you will go to hell. Commit sin B. and you will go to hell. It has been a form of manipulation of the masses and it has worked
 @noneofyourbizzness  @becky Not true  noyb. I've been in hells all over this planet, and I have scars and pictures to prove it. Almost 40 years of walking through hell. Becky has probably lived through her own personal hell at some time, and if she wants to believe in something then what right do you have to try and ridicule her?
 You don't have to go to hell....Hell can come to you in many different forms. I have a small piece of hell i carry on a chain around my neck. It was removed from something I like to refer to as "God" ( Also known as Kevlar.). If it wasn't for God I would be missing some internal organ that I need to live.
 Becky you go on believing what you want to. Don't let any armchair atheists give you a bad time. These people don't believe in hell, because they've never been there. God bless you.
@Razor1 Iâm a Former Marine who served from 1999-2006, I've seen no hell as described in the book of desert tales, only religious fanaticism destroying our reality.Â
Â
I was an athiest in a foxhole, literally!
@Razor1 @noneofyourbizzness @becky What rubbish.Poor Becky is convinced that all homosexuals are supposedly going to a place not in our realm.What right does Becky or you condemn these people to this place? I agree that 40 years worth of war is hell but this is not the same place that Becky is referring to you.I don't give to sheeits what are who you believe in.But when you issue threats of eternal suffering to others to a place that has not been proven to exsist you can expect harsh critisism.The problem with you Christians is its a whole lot about what or who you are against and not a whole lot of who and what you are for.
 @noneofyourbizzness  @becky Time will come and you will believe that there is hell and there is heaven but i hope it wont be too late for you. God bless you.
Â
@musiclover Voltaire was wrong, yep - dead wrong. Same old argument and the only reinforcement you try and give it is by yelling or typing in caps. The burden of proof is on you, real proof - evidence, and you can't have fact and faith in the same mode of thinking, its either provable by evidence - fact, or its the lack of evidence and wishful thinking - faith.
Â
By you claiming âFACTâ you are in turn denouncing your own faith, you must have faith to believe what you so heartily call fact. Silly mouth-breather.
@noneofyourbizzness Because it is FACT! Just because you choose not to believe it, or because we can't "prove" it to your satisfaction doesn't mean it isn't a fact. And there have been many people who have testified that they have been to the brink of Hell and seen and heard the proof - but you probably wouldn't believe them, either. Even Voltaire, when he was dying, asked the onlookers to pull him back from the fire - look it up!
@Altazi @becky If you can't prove the exsistance of god why not present it as faith instead of fact? The LGBT community is under siege from conservative Christians who believe their religon is superior to all beliefs or non beliefs.People like Becky looooove to point out that homosexuals are going to burn in hell while ignoring the fact that many of her fellow Christians are most likely going there too.(if there is such a place which is another arguement altogether)
@Altazi @becky
@Altazi @noneofyourbizzness @becky So if you can't prove the exsistance of god why not present it as faith instead of fact? Why should the Christian belief be superior to other beliefs or non beliefs?
 @noneofyourbizzness  @Altazi  @becky You illustrate my point perfectly. You can neither prove nor disprove the existence of God, so why should your belief be superior to those of someone who believes differently?
@Altazi @becky How do disprove sometthing that hasn't been proven in the first place? Let me put it to you this way.Prove to me that this supernatural enity that you call god exsists and I will prove to you the exsistance of purple unicorns
 @noneofyourbizzness  @becky So please disprove it. Conclusively.
@becky Catholics are now told that purgatory was actually a farce while most protestants dropped hell off in the 1920's. Id prefer not being in your heaven or any other delusion for that matter because its sounds like what Christopher Hitchens said so perfectly, a "Celestial North Korea." Â
@becky Once agai you have absolutely no proof of the nonsense that you speak of.
@becky Silly desert tales.
 @OliverNicholas  @becky Nothing silly at all. go to that place and check it out people till this day cannot walk in that burned city just because there is so much ashes. You need to start traveling and learning a real history.
@becky Please climb back under your rock. What you do under that rock is your business, but when in public and clamoring on about fire and brimstone - dont expect to be spared from ridicule.
 @becky You're crazy. Where do you get these "facts" of yours? They're completely inaccurate, but perfect for someone who's into fairy tales.
