Former mayor Sam Adams wastes no time in getting a new job

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Former Portland Mayor Sam Adams has been named executive director of the City Club of Portland, a 100-year-old nonprofit organization that holds Friday forums on public affairs and does research on issues.
Adams' election in 2008 made Portland the largest city in the country with an openly gay mayor. But his term was burdened from its early days by his admission he had lied during the campaign about a sexual relationship with a teenager. He didn't run for re-election. Charlie Hales succeeded him this month.
In a statement Wednesday, Adams said the job means he can "continue to encourage exceptional urban public policy in a region I love" and said the City Club's "tradition of unbiased, citizen-led policy research remains unique and imperative in today's hyper-partisan environment."

Wont this roach go away???
hope the city club of portland doesnt allow minors to enter. or at least has a chaperone to and from the bathroom to keep them away from sam adams.Â
And here I thought we were done with Scam Adams.
If Sam is my only defense against all the Bike haters out there, I'll take him gladly. Â I am not a car hater, and I try to stay out of their way. Â Exercise at my age and bugget are hard to come by. Â It's a lifestlye that I for one am proud of. Â The former Mayor knew his limitations and did not run for office again. Â I am an adult , not a child, you can't blame one man for the problems of this city. Â Seems to me that Adams loves this City for what it could be and not what it is at times.
"Sam has demonstrated time and again that he cares deeply about education and Portland's youth. He has been a champion of one Portland, paying close attention to the needs of east Portland in both word and deed." - Karen Gray, Parkrose School District superintendent.
Â
This has to be one of the most ridiculous and wrong-headed statements I've seen on the Portland City Club website (among many others on the PCC website concerning Adam's appointment) in support of Adam's recent appointment as executive director. Caring about Portland's youth......right:-), wonder how many more underage teenage Beau Breedloves are out there that we don't know about.  Champion of one Portland.......yeah, if you define his almost exclusive catering to the gay and bike lobbies, while neglecting the legitimate concerns and interests of the vast majority of other Portlanders. The statement he ".........paying close attention to the needs of east Portland in both word and deed." That has to be the biggest laugher of them all. He couldn't find east Portland if his life depended on it, much less devoting any attention to solving some of the long-term problems facing this area (crime, blight, streets is disrepair). Parkrose, David Douglas, etc. have been treated like a red-headed stepchild for years.  Karen Gray is either completely misinformed and/or willfully choosing to be totally ignorant of Adam's tenure in the mayor's office, or she is looking to curry favor with Adams once he begins his new job on January 24th. Either way, the taxpayers, parents and school age children of Parkrose deserve much more candid and competent leadership in the district's superintendent's office.    Â
OK, KATU, you can take him out of the "Politic" section of the news now. He is now just like the rest of us!
@jpk ....that self absorbed, self centered creep will NEVER be "like the rest of us". If he's like you........you're on your own !
I meant he is now a private citizen, no longer a notorious political entity!Â
Like a bad case of herpes.
Well I will not be going to city club I was wanting to join this year . City club is puttin a man in charge who is a bully
Sounds like the City Club may have gotten what they deserve, from reading the comments. Â I'm just glad I don't have to see Mr. Charm in any news spots anymore on tv. Â He was nauseating! Â I don't live in Portland, but I sure got tired of seeing him on the news. Â I live in a town that has a wonderful mayor with no baggage. Â What a concept!
He wasn't about to leave Portland and leave his buddies behind! (Or whomevers behind he is into nowdays)
"his buddies behind!" Nice one!
dang i was hoping he was moving down to antarctica to study penguins or something
Better him being at the City Club than holding the purse-strings of the people.
He's their problem child now.
Hate on him all you want but he  was actually a great mayor who worked really hard and cared about this city. I'm guessing 80% of the negative comments are from people who don't even live in Portland.  If so please can it and go post your ignorant garbage somewhere else.
@nwipac A great Mayor! You been across that bridge taking advantage of the new pot laws?
@Pointblank @nwipac HEY! Don't mistake an ignorant person for a cannabis consumer. I live in portland, consume cannabis and knew damn good and well this turd needed a good flushing.
Â
Maybe a head injury is what leads some to think Adams was a "great mayor". Sure as heck isn't cannabis!
 @nwipacÂ
Hate is an active word and because I thought so little of Sam, that would not describe my feelings about his work.
Â
And I care a great deal about many things. By my skills and choices may not make me a good fit for any job simply because of that. Adams was not a bad mayor because he didn't care. He was a bad mayor because he appeared to have an agenda that the public did not agree with and chose to execute that no matter what else was said even if these âideasâ were terrible ones that people have long ago abandoned, nothing more foolish than following a fool.
Â
And I doubt 80% of the people who post negative comments about him don't live in Portland. Since Portland houses nearly half the state's population, and since no one outside of the area even knows his name, it is far more probable that nearly all of the comments are from people who live WITHIN Portland. I certainly have said nothing kind about him, and my living in Portland re-dates his arrival, let alone his tenure.
Â
So I will not CAN anything. I didn't vote for this man, and he ended up still being "my" mayor. And then every single act he did (save for approving of some administrative stuff on paying for repairs) I disliked. I would have far preferred to have NO mayor than this man.
Â
If nothing is done, at least nothing is done baldly and that is what Adams did, a bad job.
Â
Â
Wah wah wah. I don't care if he "worked really hard and cared", it doesn't mean a damn thing if he didn't do a good job. He wasted money on pet projects and didn't accomplish squat. Oh, and he got himself foreclosed and liked to hook up with teens. No wonder this state gets pedophiles and nutjobs in public service jobs. Have fun cheerleading your freak parade.
@nwipac I live in Portland and I think he SUCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Pvpbw He did suck and he got caught! Then he lied about it.
 @nwipac I, for one, don't 'hate' Sam Adams.Â
Â
I believe him to be a person of questionable morals with a demonstrated propensity towards lying to cover up his many misdeeds. That demonstrates a lack of character, and leads me to believe that he is neither trustworthy, or possessing the traits I feel would make him an effective leader. It was those traits that caused many statewide elected officials (even within his own party and sociological groupings) to distance themselves from, and refuse to publicly work with, him.Â
Â
While I will conceed that there were a few things he did that benefited the PMA as a whole, I submit that he did many more that were ideologically slanted only towards specific sociological groups within the whole at great expense to the rest. He was also disturbingly, mind-numbingly obtuse in his style of governance.Â
In 1870 African-Americans received the right to vote in the America.73 years later, Portland City Club admitted it's first African-American member, Dr. DeNorval Unthank. In 1920 women were granted the right to vote in America. 51 years later in 1971, Portland City Club, all-male for roughly six decades, began admitting women to membership after being pressured by e by lawyer and future City Commissioner Mildred Schwab was successful. Are these the kind of people we can trust to be up or open to on the latest science and who hold the public's best interests at heart?
"... the City Club's "tradition of unbiased, citizen-led policy research remains unique and imperative in today's hyper-partisan environment."
Â
And you hired Sam Adams as your executive director? Nothing says "unbiased" as Sam Adams! Â /*sarcasmÂ
@washcomom Washington County mom- this doesn't concern you.  Don't you have a traffic jam to go sit in somewhere in Beaverton?
 @nwipac What's the matter? Hit a nerve, I see.Â
The City Club couldn't do any better? Really, City Club, Did you advertise this position?Â
Â
Is Sam Adams deserving of representing this city (in any capacity) one day longer?Â
Â
Oh, how we cannot quit wrap our heads around the fact - Sam Adams does not translate to being a true representative of law abiding, truthful integrity bound Portlanders. But that's okay - his entire staff lied on his behalf and the AG of this state could not figure out how to prosecute Mr. Adams for being a DECEITFUL LYING pedophile, too.Â
Â
So we get what we get - when we continue to "settle" for someone as intentionally, illegally and arrogantly low as Sam Adams.Â
Â
Â
@englishdaisy As with so many other positions created or filled by former elected officials, it's the connections and influence that they're after. He could be the poster boy for useless politicians (perhaps is should be?), all that matters is that he has most of the cites executive leadership on speed dial.Â
One more reason I will never support the City Club, which is nothing more than a self-congratulating circle of Portland elites promoting their own special interests while pretending to care about the whole city.
Unbiased policy my arse! I wonder how long before he runs this one into the ground?
Governor Adams has a nice ring to it.
@Dr. Rawdog Why stop there? How about President Adams. Instead of killing children with drone strikes like Obama does, Adams will just take them into the bathroom. His first order of business will be to pardon Jerry Sandusky.
I cant believe having no integrity is a good job qualification.
He pretty much had to get a job right away. Â With his bankruptcy, he seems to handle his own finances as well as he handled the city's. Â
Â
Just don't let him get hold of the purse strings.
Sounds like a perfect job for a policy wanker.
That's OK. I venture a guess that most of the City Club elite live in gated communities or up in the West Hills if not the Pearl. Nothing like being down in the trenches with the real people!Â
But not to worry peeps we now have hale..He is going to meet with bloomberg to see how he can take your rights away. And heard he was doing an interview today for portlandia..Folks I think we are going to have the biggest potholes in the country..Mayor is to busy to do his job.............
"Early days he lied"............ And throughout his term as well!
@Rob C 503 Including making the PPB lie and do coverups.
@whirledworld  @Rob C 503 like when he wrecked his car drunk driving?
That is one membership I will not be seeking to renew.
I just have issues with it being called non-bias and he's involved, it just doesn't make sense.

Good for Mr. Adams - not his biggest fan, but I told him not to do a 'Nixon' during his recluse period. I do like the haircut and it does make him look more credible and I hope he does some more stuff on Portlandia since he helped create the concept with his actions...
@boned So he "looks" better? How does that translate to openly DISHONEST, openly PEDOPHILE seeking, openly city busting Adams - being a good fit for representing anything "unbiased" in this high powered City Club Executive position?Â
Â
What a joke - giving any further power to Sam Adams. A man who spit on the integrity and ethics of the highest elected office in our city every day he sat in the Mayor's seat. And hand picked a staff of thugs to colude with him. Day in and day out.Â
@englishdaisy I doubt that you will check back and since I do not 'live' on the computer my comment to you is that it is was only my opinion based on a story of which you have no control over, sorry you hate so much. Apparently you missed the part about me not being a big fan of Samuel - to be expected and it is OK...
Well, we should all be thankful that he didn't decide to open up some sort of "driver improvement clinic". I'm sure we all recall the incident at the Jantzen Beach mall a few years back. He slammed into another motorist in the parking lot with his truck, then abruptly applied full thrust in reverse jumping a curb and coming to rest in a landscaped shrub area. The good mayor then hopped from the cab with a confused look on his face, pants zipper wide open with an odor of alcohol on his breath. As Ralph pointed out, nice to know the city club has such high standards for their executive directors. Maybe Neil Goldschmidt can seek employment there to, when he tires of hiding out in France. Â
@Biker1085 That openly drunk driving incident? If I had been one of his intended targets in that parking lot- I wouldn't have settled for the Portland Police keeping all members of the public shielded away from him. Until the "investigation" at the parking lot was completed. I would have marched right up to Sam - who was far back from everyone else by hand picked members of the PB - and smelled his breath from myself. '
Â
Imagine any police force acting on his behalf - making sure Adams was not duly and properly run through a series of road tests for drunk driving right there. Like they SHOULD HAVE. In front of all of those witnesses.Â
Â
Instead they drove him home. Tucked him in. And it all went away. Balls on fire WRONG .
