OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Lawmakers in the Washington state House are looking to strengthen rules related to adoption.

A measure approved Wednesday night would have agencies assess how adoptive parents are planning to handle discipline in the home. After the child is placed, a follow-up assessment would again explore those issues with parents. The bill would also lead to more record-keeping to help officials track adoptions that later have problems.

Democratic Rep. Mary Helen Roberts says the goal is prevent cases of abuse highlighted in a recent state report.

Republican Rep. Brad Klippert spoke against the measure, saying the state needs to quit reaching into the homes of families.

The measure passed 90-7 and now goes to the Senate.
