Probably one of the least favorite items on a to-do list, cleaning out the garage is nonetheless a necessary task. Wouldn’t it be nice to actually have room for your car in the garage, instead of piles of stuff? With the weather getting warmer now is the perfect time to get your garage organized and ready for summer. Here are a few tips to get you started.
1. Tackle one space at a time.
An entire garage can be overwhelming to clean. Start with one corner and work your way out. Organize your tool bench or get your bikes correctly mounted. If you’re sifting through a heap of items, try laying them out in categories, like yard care, sports and car to get a better idea of what should go where.
2. Know how much space you actually have.
If you want to park your car in the garage, there’s only going to be so much space leftover for storage. Know the dimensions you’re working with and try to match the space with the amount of stuff you have. If your garage is filled to the brim, take each item under careful consideration. If you haven’t used it in a year, it should be donated to charity or sold.
3. Look up.
The walls and ceiling of your garage can make for some great storage space. Bikes and other equipment can be mounted on the ceiling and you’d be surprised how much floor space opens up with the addition of a few shelves. Hooks and hook rails are also ideal for storing brooms and garden tools, keeping them in sight, but off the floor.
4. Check your doors
What’s the point of sprucing up the inside if your garage doors are worn down? The curb appeal of your house starts with your garage doors, so make sure yours are giving off the right vibe. A fresh coat of paint or an upgrade can do wonder for the value of your home. There are even doors available with windows to see in to your newly organized garage.
Taking the time to make your garage an organized space will not only save your sanity, it can up the appeal of your entire home.
