Older homes are fairly common in the northwest, and so are the wooden garage doors that usually accompany them. In addition to lending a certain charm to your home’s overall appearance, wooden garage doors are usually very well made and built to last. However, as newer materials for garage doors become more readily available, it’s getting harder to repair or replace worn parts on wooden garage doors. Luckily, there are some things you can do to keep your garage door looking like new for a long time.
At least once a year, give your wooden garage door a lookover. Check all the working parts, including the springs, rollers and hinges. Make sure they’re well lubricated with a simple silicone spray. Steer clear of WD40, as it has a tendency to drip and can actually attract dirt to the areas you’re trying to lubricate.
At the same time, you can check for any loose screws, nuts or bolts. Tighten or replace any that are loose or worn. Also, take a look at the tracks and rollers, to make sure they’re correctly lined up. Unaligned rollers can catch and cause the door to stick halfway. If your door has become increasingly stiff or hard to lift, the springs could need adjusting or repair. This is one job best left to the professionals, as it can be hazardous.
Finally, keep your garage door looking like new. Wood is an extremely versatile material, so paint or stain your garage door with whichever color suits you. Depending on where you live and how much your door is used, you may need to replace the paint or stain every few years. Make sure you use a quality pain designed for outdoor use and be sure to sand and clean the door before repainting.
