PORTLAND, Ore. - Brandon Roy will miss the next four games - and could be sidelined for the rest of the season - after injuring his groin on Tuesday night.

"Not good," head coach Nate McMillan said after practice on Wednesday. "You know, he wants to try and come back as soon as possible. But that type of injury, it takes some time. So he comes in today and is really sore, and that's not a good sign."

Roy was injured on a freak play at the end of the first quarter against the Washington Wizards. He was trying to block a last-second shot by Caron Butler, but fell awkwardly as Butler came down on top of him.

"His body weight fell on me too, so he pushed me pretty far down," the Blazers All-Star said. "It was just an accident play. But it was unfortunate."

The good news is that he didn’t tear his groin, but groin strains usually take weeks of rest to heal. Still, Roy is holding out hope he’ll be able to return before the season ends on April 16.

"Just the way it feels, it’s painful to walk," Roy said after spending Wednesday’s practice in the rehab pool. "I think it’s definitely at least a week and a half, maybe two weeks before I may start trying to run on it again. So I’m not saying it’s a guarantee I’ll be able to come back and play. But if I can, even if it’s the last two games, I want to try to come back and try to finish the season."

Roy told KATU last week his goal is to have the Blazers finish the season with at least 42 wins, which would give them their first winning record in five seasons. After the team’s inspiring win over Washington on Tuesday night, Portland has 38 wins with ten games remaining. Eight of those ten games are against Western Conference playoff teams. The Blazers say Roy will miss the next four games and will be re-evaluated at the end of next week.

"I just want to do my best to lead this team," Roy told KATU. "And for me it’s hard to do that from the sideline. So whatever I can do to get back on the floor and help us win is important."
