This is a press release courtesy of the Portland Beavers Brian Barden collected two hits, David Freese recorded an RBI and Mike Parisi threw six shutout innings to lead the Memphis Redbirds to a 1-0 win over the Portland Beavers at AutoZone Park on Wednesday. Memphis (57-47) used back-to-back hits in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead and held on with a solid outing from Parisi (8-2), who scattered seven hits over six scoreless innings and logged two strike outs to pick up his sixth win in his last seven appearances. Mark Worrell capped a shut-out performance by the Memphis bullpen, who gave up just two hits over three innings of relief, with a game-ending strike out to earn the save and hand Portland (54-48) just its second loss in nine games. Peter Ciofrone recorded two hits against Memphis to extend his hitting streak to a record-setting 20 games. His current streak surpassed Terrmel Sledge’s 19-game hitting streak in 2006, to set a new franchise record since the Beavers returned to the Pacific Coast League in 2001. Justin Germano (2-6) took the loss for the Beavers despite six strong innings in which he allowed just one run on five hits and struck out six Memphis batters. Vincent Sinisi was 3-for-4 and Craig Stanberry tallied a pair of hits for the Beavers, who out-hit the Redbirds 9-6 in the loss. In the second inning, Josh Phelps, who led off the inning with a double, came around to score on a base hit by Freese to plate the game’s lone run. Stansberry nearly leveled the score in the seventh, but was thrown out on a close play at the plate attempting to score from first on a base hit by Ciofrone. Portland and Memphis square off for the third game of a four-game set Thursday. NOTES: Earlier in the day, the Padres purchased the contract of Portland pitcher Wil Ledezma … Wednesday’s game marked the first time the Beavers had been shut out since a 1-0 affair at Tacoma on June 22 … The loss ends Portland’s four-game winning streak on the road. |
