PORTLAND, Ore. - Brandon Roy says he will be ready to play for the Trail Blazers well before the start of the regular season.

Roy came out of summer hiding on Wednesday to talk about the unexpected knee surgery he had six days ago.

Roy believes he will be all healed up in six weeks by the start of training camp, even though he knows the team will likely force him to sit out a little longer.

There are encouraging signs.  On Wednesday, Roy was not using crutches, did not have a knee brace and didn't even limp.

Roy's knee problem started back in early July when his left knee suddenly felt sore one morning.  He rested it but the pain would not go away.

Last week, he decided to have an MRI and it revealed he had a cartilage tear that needed minor surgery.

"You always fear the worst, just because we didn't know exactly what it was until he was going to go in there," Roy said.  "So I was thinking about what happened to Greg last season and this year.  I was not upset for myself but more for this team and for this organization because we had so much momentum coming into it.  But it was funny, when I woke up from the surgery and they told me everything was great, I was really excited for a guy that just had surgery because I knew everything was still pretty much on pace."

On pace as in having Roy, Greg Oden and LaMarcus Aldridge all on the floor together.

Roy has already started rehabilitation - doing flexibility and strengthening exercises on his left knee.
