Beavers shut down Cal in final stretch to secure win

Oregon State players, from left to right, Seth Tarver, Calvin Hampton, Kevin McShane (0) and Daniel Deane celebrate their lead against California in the closing seconds of the second half of an NCAA colllege basketball game in Corvallis, Ore., Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Calvin Haynes scored 19 points, including a key 3-pointer and layup with less than four minutes to go, and Oregon State defeated California 65-54 on Saturday.

The victory snapped a four-game winning streak for the Golden Bears (20-7, 9-5 Pacific-10 Conference), who are seeking their first NCAA tournament berth in three seasons.

Oregon State (13-13, 7-8) won its third straight conference game and swept the season series against Cal for the first time since the 1994-95 season.

The Golden Bears led by as many as 12 points early in the second half, but the Beavers went ahead midway through on Haynes' jumper.

Oregon State held on to just slight edge the rest of the way until pulling away on Haynes' 3-pointer and a layup with 2:33 left.

Theo Robertson had 14 points for California, while Jamal Boykin had 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Golden Bears, coming off a 78-60 victory at Oregon, did not have 7-foot center Jordan Wilkes, who suffered a concussion in the first half of the game Thursday. Sophomore Harper Kamp made his first start his Wilkes' place.

The Golden Bears had defeated the Beavers in seven-straight meetings before Oregon State pulled off a 69-65 victory in Berkeley on Jan. 22.

In the rematch, Oregon State went on a 9-2 run in the first half, capped by Lathen Wallace's free throws, to go up 13-7. Jerome Randle answered with a 3-pointer for Cal.

That touched off a 19-2 run for the Golden Bears that made it 26-15 after D.J. Seeley's jumper.

Cal led 28-21 at the half. Patrick Christopher's 3-pointer and Robertson's layup extended the margin to 33-21 early in the second half.

Oregon State got within 40-38 on Haynes' jumper and tied it on Calvin Hampton's layup. But the Beavers were unable to pull ahead until another Haynes jumper made it 44-42 with 9:13 to go.

Jerome Randle, who led Cal in scoring with an average of 18.4 points per game, was held to just three points.

Wallace finished with 12 points for the Beavers, who were coming off a 66-54 victory over Stanford. Oregon State has seven conference wins after going 0-18 in the Pac-10 last season.

The dramatic improvement is largely credited to coach Craig Robinson, President Barack Obama's brother-in-law, who was hired in the offseason after two years at Brown.

Former Oregon State coach Jay John, let go in the midst of last season, is an assistant coach at Cal under Mike Montgomery.

It was Oregon State's final home game of the season.
