Soccer: Timbers move to first place

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Timbers' soccer league record remained unbeaten with a 3 to 1 win over Charleston S.C.'s Battery team on Friday night -- vaulting Portland into a share of first place. This stretches the Timbers' winning streak to 20 games.

On Friday night the "local kid" was the star as Benson High School's own Alex Nimo helped stretch the Timbers' league-record unbeaten streak. Nimo got a rare start and the 19 year old took advantage of it. He notched an assist to make his first goal as a member of the Timbers.

Also in the first half, Mandjou Keita headed home his team. This was his team-leading eighth goal of the season.

After losing the first match of the year, Portland has yet to be defeated again. The coach, Gavin Wilkinson, said he is "happy but not satisfied" with the results.

As Portland celebrates the 3 to 1 win, it is now tied with the Carolina Railhawks for first. Next up for Portland is a road game at Montreal on Wednesday.
