Blazers President: 'No decision' on Brandon Roy
PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Trail Blazers Team President Larry Miller insisted on Wednesday that the team has not made a decision to waive Brandon Roy.
In the team’s first news conference since the league-wide gag order was lifted, Miller said “absolutely no decision has been made.”
Two sources from other NBA teams told KATU’s Katy Brown on Monday that team owner Paul Allen made a decision to waive Roy under the new labor agreement’s “amnesty clause” before the season starts.
“It’s not like it’s unknown that Brandon had health issues last year,” Miller said. “Everybody knows that. But again, what Brandon did for this organization, what he’s meant to this community, what he’s meant to this team, there would be no way we’d make a decision like this without looking at every possible factor involved. And that’s exactly what we’re doing right now.”
Miller said the first phone call the team made this morning was to Roy’s agent to set up a meeting.
“We are going to look at every option available to us before we make a decision on where we’re going,” Miller said.
Miller said often-injured center Greg Oden is part of the team’s “plan A” going forward. Oden is a restricted free-agent, meaning other teams can make him offers but the Blazers would have the option to match the highest offer to keep Oden, who hopes to return to the court in January.
Miller also said the team’s search for a general manager is still on hold and it’s possible the team could go the entire season without a permanent hire.
“Our goal is and continues to be making our team better,” he said.
