Sources: Chip Kelly staying at Oregon
Chip Kelly is staying at Oregon.
Two people with knowledge of the decision confirmed Sunday night that Kelly is passing up a chance to coach in the NFL to remain with the Ducks. One person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Oregon and Kelly haven't formally announced the decision, while the other person wasn't authorized to reveal Kelly's plans.
The decision was first reported by ESPN.
Kelly had lengthy interviews this weekend with the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles, and also talked to the Buffalo Bills. Last year, he had talks with Tampa Bay.
The 49-year-old coach earned a base salary of $2.8 million this past season last at Oregon and has five years left on his contract. The No. 5 Ducks, known for the innovative offense that Kelly devised, beat Kansas State in the Fiesta Bowl on Thursday night to finish the season 12-1.
Kelly is 46-7 in four years at Oregon and the Ducks have been to four straight BCS bowl games — including a bid for the national championship against Auburn two seasons ago — and won three Pac-12 championships. He originally came to the Ducks in 2007 as offensive coordinator under Mike Bellotti. Before that, he was offensive coordinator at New Hampshire.
Earlier Sunday, a person familiar with Cleveland's coaching search said the team passed on Kelly after he was indecisive about making the leap to the NFL. The Browns nearly had a deal with Kelly two days ago, but they've moved on to other candidates, said the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the search.
The buyout for Kelly's contract with Oregon is $3.5 million.
Kelly's decision to stay at Oregon came as a surprise after months of speculation that this season was his last with the Ducks. It appeared that offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich was the leading candidate to replace him.
Ducks fans at the Fiesta Bowl made their feelings clear by chanting "We want Chip!" during the victory celebration. Nike co-founder and Oregon mega-booster Phil Knight proclaimed to a reporter following the game: "I was one of 'em."
Kelly himself said about the NFL interest: "I'll listen and we'll see."
But at the same time, he acknowledged a love for Oregon.
"It's a special place with special people. They accepted me six years ago when I was at New Hampshire. Not many people knew about me," Kelly said. "Gave me an opportunity to come here. It really means a lot."
In staying with Oregon, Kelly will still have to deal with fallout from an NCAA investigation into the school's use of recruiting services.
The inquiry is the result of reports that surfaced in 2011 concerning payments Oregon made to two such services, including a $25,000 check sent to Willie Lyles and Houston-based Complete Scouting Services in 2010. Lyles had a relationship with a player who committed to Oregon.
Last month, Yahoo Sports reported that Oregon is headed toward a hearing with the NCAA committee on infractions because the two sides couldn't come to an agreement on appropriate sanctions. Yahoo cited two unidentified sources.
Earlier this year, Oregon requested a summary disposition in the case. The school presented a report to the infractions committee outlining violations the school believed occurred and appropriate sanctions. But that request was apparently turned down.
The NCAA does not comment on ongoing investigations.
"We've cooperated fully with them. If they want to talk to us again, we'll continue to cooperate fully," Kelly said following the Fiesta Bowl. "I feel confident in the situation."
Kelly explained that he stayed at Oregon following the interest from Tampa Back because he had "unfinished business" with the Ducks. The team was ranked No. 1 and appeared headed for another shot at the national championship until a 17-14 loss to Stanford on Nov. 17.

AP Sports Writers Tom Withers in Cleveland and Rob Maaddi in Philadelphia contributed to this report.
Welp, he has coached the team well and obviously has an awesome record for the past 4 years. Don't the ducks have one of the weakest schedules in the league though? Kind of like the Lakers going against the Idaho Stampede? (just thought I heard that somewhere)
@mikeyb123 This year they did as far as the out of conference schedule is concerned however, that's only because teams backed out and they had to act fast to get teams on the schedule so they took who they could get. One of those teams was Kansas State who they ended up playing this year in the Fiesta Bowl. K-State had a home and home set up scheduled and they requested to cancel and Oregon obliged them.
@scoreboard So this year would be tough to determine if we were really a "good team"?
@scoreboard Ahhh, Gotcha. Thanks for the info!
@mikeyb123 Not really because they played very similar in conference games to the other teams in the conference and they crushed all of them except Stanford. Their average margin of victory was around 35 points which was a very good indicator of how good they were and they thoroughly dominated Kansas State. K-State won the Big-12 conference.
Â
Keep in mind that Oregon destroyed almost all their opponents (except Stanford) while using their 2nd and 3rd string players in the second half. If memory serves, the USC and Stanford games were the only ones in which the starters played more than 3 quarters.
Two people who were not allowed to speak, yet spoke anyway. Should not be allowed.

"In staying with Oregon, Kelly will still have to deal with fallout from an NCAA investigation into the school's use of recruiting services."
Â
It will be time to be held accountable at least.
Â
Â
He probably wants to make sure he is vested in PERS so he can rape the system like Bellotti is .
@Oh My Yep, just like Mike Riley with his huge contract (Riley get $1.7 million per year with all his incentives).
Â
If colleges want to get the best coaches, they have to pony up the money.
Like it says...If its not Broken..Dont Fix it.....look at Steve Spurrier..took him many yrs to get a winning team again after failing in the NFL... the grass only Looks greener on the other side.....
College Football is where the fun is , Hope he stays with the Ducks....NFL is not exciting to me anymore....
After completing his "armpit of the country" tour, I can see why Eugene looks so good.
@al_02 It's not like Eugene is so fantastic, either right? As far as the armpit is concerned, when the last time you went to downtown Portland? It's not like those street-kids are holding poodles and looking for jobs... amirite?
Â
FWIW: Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburg... that so called armpit, built the US into what it is. Where do you think all that steel for the highest buildings in the US came from? How about most of those cars you drove (until you bought Japanese)? That "armpit" has more to be proud of, that almost anywhere in the US, and has the people to prove it.
Did he find out how evil the NFL really is and bow out.. Good for him.. Smart move !
With the players Kelly has, he should have won a national championship, but unfortunately, due to bad coaching they never got a shot. Going for it on fourth down, trick plays, going as fast as you can, that's rookie coaching and won't win many games in the NFL.
@The Voice of Reason  The Ducks should be #2 in the nation when it all shakes out. Four BCS bowls in a row, Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl victories and a 46-7 overall record. Not too bad for a crappy coach.   Whatever, I'm sure you could do better.
Â
Sounds more like the voice of sour grapes.
"Earlier Sunday, a person familiar with Cleveland's coaching search said the team passed on Kelly after he was indecisive about making the leap to the NFL."
Â
Two years in a row Kelly has had an opportunity to move to the NFL and couldn't pull the trigger. Two observations: 1) Kelly is going to get a rep as being indecisive in making the career move; and 2) Kelly's star will not burn so bright for NFL owners and GMs in the future after Oregon loses Conference Champion and Bowl Eligibility after the NCAA gets done with them. Of course Oregon will keep paying him millions even as he flagrantly violated NCAA rules and Kelly will probably try to leverage the NFL's interest for a contract extension and more money. You may win a lot of football games Chip but that does not make you a winner.
"Chip, you should have got out when you had the chance" Pete Carroll
In light of the possible sanctions, much respect to Chip for staying and facing whatever may come down the pike.Â
Â
He's the modern day Knute Rockne where Rockne was the first to implement the forward pass as a regular part of the offense; Chip is the first to implement and run the no-huddle offense to perfection.
@str1ngb3nd3r "In light of the possible sanctions, much respect to Chip for staying and facing whatever may come down the pike."
Â
He didn't stay to face the music. He stayed because the NFL teams wouldn't tolerate indecisiveness and he has a 5-year-guaranteed deal.
Â
Kelly deserves credit for running the 2-minute drill all game long but teams will adjust and 5 years from now it won't be a huge advantage. Kelly also has a great 4 year record but it will be very hard to sustain that kind of winning percentage long term.Â
@I812 You haters hate for the sake of hating. He stayed because he has a good thing going. Cleveland? Philly? Listed to the offer, but hard pass... HARD.
Â
Â
Hey Chip thanks for an awesome 4 years plus taking the ducks to another level that is one hell of a lot higher than previous coaches....Welcome aboard, and here is the wheel...please steer some more.
I do know that he is a great innovative coach, and great in interviews by keeping team functions close to the vest. Really do not like that he as well as most coaches are public employees but that's just the way it is....
regardless of all the Haters comments, Coach Kelly has brought a new and very entertaining aspect to College (and yes several NFL Teams are now copying him). Good for you chip and well made decision.
@Watch This Space I for one would like to see him go. It is time for the UofO to bring in a coach who will make his players live by rules not to think they don't have to abide by them because they are better than everyone. Sorry to see him stay so I guess we will continue to read about the law breakers.
@Somanyfools  @Watch This Space Obviously you haven't been paying attention. He kicked Masoli off the team after suspending him for a year because Masoli couldn't stay out of trouble.Â
Â
He gives his athletes a second chance if they screw up but gives them a set of guidelines to follow. If they follow them, they get back on the team. If not, they're gone.
Â
Haven't you ever screwed up at your job and your boss gave you a second chance? What's the difference?
So, the NFL not impressed with the Chipster
@kramr Impressed enough to fly to where he was working for several days of talks. Any of your possible employers fly to where you are working and offer you truckloads of cash?
@Bob McMasterson  airline tickets and hotel rooms are chump change for NFL teams.  If a team is considering coughing up  $3.5million to buy out his contract, a plane ticket and hotel room are hardly an indicator of how serious a team is about a coach.
Great for the Ducks. I will wonder if he will get a salary adjustment by donors. Since the previous Duck"s coach is one of the highest PERS payouts in Oregon one might wonder how much Kelly will end up with when he draws... Probably now part of the 1% in Oregon...
Â
Â
Awesome!! Glad he is staying in Oregon with the Ducks!!
I wonder how many more millions of dollars he will get from UO and Nike? Â What a waste for college sports, now a major US corporation, nolonger amateur related.
Thank goodness!!!
@Manda J Yes, I can only imagine how little you have going for you in life that you need to rely on a college football team in order to feel happiness.
 @Riley35  @Manda J You're an a $ $.....haters gunna hate...
GO DUCKS!!
 @Riley35  @Manda J I bet you're a hit at parties.
This is good news for the Ducks fans. Not so much for the rest of you.
Yeh, now the state can continue to match his his exorbitant PERS salary contribution. What a bargain.
@peckishpete WAAAAHHH!!! Remember Beaver fan.....Mike Riley gets a piece of the PERS pie as well with this $1.7 million contract.Â
I Smell Phil Knights money in this !
@Rob C 503 And that's a problem because? It's Phil Knight's money and he can spend it any way that he wants. It's not illegal. Damn near every college has a rich benefactor. Oregon's just happens to have some influence in the sports world.Â
Â
Phil Knight also give his money to other college related causes such as cancer research at OHSU and there is a law library named after him at Stanford.
@scoreboard ........did I say it was a problem? Do you see the word problem in my post. Did see any thing referring to illegality?? I merely made an observation and you took off.........
@Rob C 503  @Montavilla No but you assumed that Phil Knight's money is what kept Chip Kelly at Oregon.
@Montavilla ......I didn't preach anything. Neither should you
@Rob C 503 practice what you preach then - you're "assuming" Phil Knight had something to do with Chip staying, grow up
Asuming can be dangerous and flat out wrong. I have no problem with Phil Knight and what he does with his money is his business !!!!
 @Rob C 503  @scoreboard Kind of implied.....
Â
So many people have problems with Phil Knight and Nike giving so much money to the Ducks so one could only assume......
 @Rob C 503Â
So?
Go Ducks!
Phil's going to have to go back to work to pay Chip's salary.
@Riley35 Yea so? Why is that a problem?
