Griffin beats out Seahawks' Wilson as Rookie of Year

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Robert Griffin III of the Washington Redskins has won The Associated Press 2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award, beating out two other sensational first-year quarterbacks.
Griffin, whose thrill-a-minute combination of running and passing skills led Washington to its first NFC East title in 13 years, pulled away from Andrew Luck of the Colts and Russell Wilson of the Seahawks in a lopsided vote announced Saturday.
RG3 earned 29 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league. Luck was next with 11 and Wilson got 10.
All three led their teams to the playoffs.
Griffin, who severely injured his right knee in a wild-card round loss to the Seahawks, set the NFL record for best passer rating by a rookie QB.
He accepted his award at the "2nd Annual NFL Honors" awards show on CBS saluting the NFL's best players, performances and plays from the 2012 season.

Both men were deserving of the award.
Really what a shock, every sports writer in the country was ready to give RG3 the award at training camp. Never mind the fact that 1 Wilson missed 0 games all year and 2 Wilson led his team to the second round of the playoffs while the other 2 rookie qb's were chillin at home watching on TV. The hype machine did its job. To bad that knee injury will make him pretty useless next year.
@Jeremy All awards are based on the regular season. Playoffs aren't supposed to be taken into consideration by the voters. Compare the stats and you'll see that RGIII had a slight edge. RW threw more TD's but in just about every other category, RGIII had the better stats. RW also threw twice as many INT's. He had 10 vs. 5 for RGIII. RGIII threw for 3200 yards vs 3118 for RW and RGIII played in one less game.

You can compare the two here and you'll see the difference:

That's not to say Wilson didn't have a great year but RGIII had a better year. Frankly I thought the vote would have been much closer.
@scoreboard the point was every sports writer in the country had this guy picked out from the get go it wouldn't have mattered they were always going to make him ROY.
@Jeremy For me Wilson was much more fun to watch. Great talent.
unfortunately this will probably be his big career achievement, with his playstyle injuries will cut his career short. The human body can only take so many hits like he takes then it will start breaking down like his already seams to be doing with his latest injury. Damnit RG3 slide once in a while.
@franksbeans Slate just ran an article where after a study of quarterbacks over the last ten years they found that running vs pocket QBs have about the same injury rates.  RG3 will probably be fine, look at AP's season after his knee was rebuilt.
@knottriel @franksbeans AP is the exception to the rule that dude just isnt human. this is the second full lknee reconstruction for RG3 if he doesn't learn to pass from the pocket his carreer will be short lived.
