PORTLAND, Ore. - If you thought Portland was already home to the best soccer the MLS has to offer, you were wrong.
The league announced on Wednesday it will bring the 2014 All-Star Game to town. A date hasn’t been set, but the game will take place between the MLS All-Stars and a top international team in late July or early August at Jeld-Wen Field.
It will be Portland’s first All-Star Game in any major-league sport.
“The Portland Timbers and their passionate fans have certainly earned the honor of hosting,” said commissioner Don Garber. “This match will showcase to an international audience the incredible devotion to the game in the Pacific Northwest that serves as one of the most important stories for our league.”
Jeld-Wen Field has been sold out for every Timbers match since it re-opened to the MLS in 2011 – a string of 42 consecutive games.
The 2013 All-Star Game is scheduled for July 31 in Kansas City, with the MLS All-Stars facing Italian Serie A club AS Roma.
