LANSING, Mich . - Two very different stories are emerging about an incident in Mexico that left a Michigan man severely injured and landed two Portland State University basketball players in hot water.
The incident happened last week in Cabo San Lucas. Details about what transpired are a little unclear at this point, but some type of altercation left 23-year-old Kyle Meager with a badly shattered jaw. It took two titanium plates and eight screws to repair the breaks.
A few days after the attack, two Portland State University basketball players, Scott Morrison and Jeremiah Dominguez were taken into custody in Mexico in connection with the incident but were later released.
A U.S. consular official in Tijuana, Charles Smith, said the men were released because the aggrieved party did not press charges. Both denied beating up Meagher.
From his home in Lansing, Michigan, Meagher said Thursday he actually did press charges against Morrison and Dominguez while in Mexico. He said he initially did not know who had attacked him but was later shown a picture of Morrison and identified him as the person who did it.
Meagher, speaking to a reporter with an ABC affiliate in Michigan, is also debunking previous reports about a deal, or negotiations of a deal, with the Morrison family.
“It was the most terrifying situation of my life,” said Meagher. He said immediately after the attack "I grabbed my mouth and there was blood all over…and I immediately knew it was bad."
"We just want them to say what they did and why they did it, and what makes them think it’s okay to do that to another American citizen and leave them in the streets of Mexico?" said Meagher's mother, Karen Shurlow.
Morrison has returned to his home in Kelowna, B.C., where he told a Canadian television station that this was all a big misunderstanding and that he was never charged with a crime.
"There was never anything like that," he said. "They just took our statement and compared it to his and I guess under Mexican law if there is not enough evidence it's just thrown out and stuff like that. So, you know, with our witnesses, and I guess them not having any, and him just saying some guy punched him once and ran off and he was in a scuffle and he wasn't sure who it was but he thought it was a big and small guy - so that's what came of it."
Morrison did indicate to the reporter for CTV there was talk of a deal between the two families. His father said upon landing in Mexico to assist his son, Meagher’s father approached him and offered to settle the matter privately for $150,000. The Morrison family said they did not accept that offer.
Morrison said he and his friends were not even in the area of the incident when it happened and had witnesses to prove his whereabouts. He said before leaving Mexico, the district attorney said "please stay another couple of days in Mexico, finish your trip on a positive note. We’ll welcome you back with open arms. We’re sorry."
Meagher's family said they are considering a lawsuit.
