Ducks pound Cougars for fourth win in a row

EUGENE, Ore. -- It got ugly real fast at Autzen Stadium on Saturday night, as the No. 16 Oregon Ducks beat the Washington State Cougars 52-6.

The Ducks had the game in the bag by halftime, and by then, most of the back-up's had entered the game to get valuable game-time experience.

Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, although only playing through midway into the second quarter, finished the night 14-18 passing for 116 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 52 yards and a score. It was confirmed after the game that Masoli had enduced a knee injury that was not considered serious.

Nate Costa played the rest of the way, and had a solid day in clean-up duty. He had 80 yards through the air, as well as 26 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

LaMichael James paced the Ducks on the ground, carrying the ball 13 times for 81 yards and two touchdowns. It was also known after the game that James had injured his ankle during the first half. Details to the injury were not yet released. Seven different Oregon players carried the football at least four times.

Oregon tight end Ed Dickson also had another solid performance, ending up with seven catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. He also passed Josh Wilcox for most career receptions by a tight end in school history, with 104.

For Washington State, the stats don't help their cause. They were outgained by the Ducks 469-158, and only had four first down in comparison with Oregon's 31. The Cougars alos lost the turnover battle 3-1.

The Ducks scored 21 points in both the first and second quarters. LaMichael James ran it in on a fourth down run from 26 yards out to start the scoring frenzy in the first, also getting a touchdown on a three yard run near the end of the quarter. Dickson as well caught a Masoli touchdown pass from 26 yards out in the period.

In the second quarter, Masoli ran it in from a yard out with under ten minutes to go in the half to put the Ducks up by a comfortable margin, 28-0. Oregon running back Andre Crenshaw added a six yard touchdown run in the quarter, and the back-up quarterback Costa also scored from four yards away. The halftime lead was 42-0 Oregon.

In the second half, the Ducks took it easy, as they pulled their starters and put in the second and third stringers.

Morgan Flint made a 40 yard field goal in the third to extend the Ducks lead to 45-0. The Cougars scored shortly afterwards, as Cougars quarterback Marshall Lobbestael rumbled it in from a yard out, taking advantage of a muffed punt by the Ducks inside their own five yard line.

The final quarter saw Oregon score for the last time, when Remene Alston, Jr. ran one in from six yards out.

The Ducks, who are now 4-1 and 2-0 in the Pac-10, play at UCLA next weekend. The 1-4, 0-3 Cougars host Arizona State.
