PORTLAND, Ore. - Local pro wrestling icon Sandy Barr has died.

Barr was a former wrestler who went on to referee matches at the Portland Sports Arena, a somewhat dingy but lively venue that was a staple of late-night television in Portland in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Barr presided over matches that included wrestling legends Rowdy Roddy Piper and Andre the Giant before the theatrical "pro wrestling" phenomena rose to a national pastime.

Broadcasts from the arena were also punctuated by numerous and humorous spots by local retail legend Tom Peterson, whose ads helped support the league and broadcasts.

Barr got his start in wrestling in the 1950s and promoted the sport for decades in Portland.

He was also known for a popular north Portland flea market.

A public memorial service and potluck is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

It will be held at Cathedral Park at the foot of the Saint John's Bridge in north Portland.
