Tommy Murphy and Brandon Wood both hit two-run home runs in the third inning as the Salt Lake Bees earned a series-opening, 4-3 victory over the Portland Beavers before 8,749 Thursday night at PGE Park.

The Bees
(36-31) scored all their runs in the third inning and got six innings from starter Henry Bonilla (5-5), who earned the win after yielding three runs, eight hits and no walks.

Pete Laforest clubbed his 11
th home run and Brian Myrow extended his hitting streak to 13 games, going 2-for-4 with two doubles for the Beavers.

Jack Cassel (5-6) gave up four runs and seven hits while striking out six over seven innings for the Beavers, who are 3-5 against the division-leading Bees this season.

Laforest cleared the wall in right-center with a solo home run as the Beavers held a short-lived lead in the second.

In the top of the third, Murphy and Wood
staked the Bees to a 4-1 lead with their two-run homers.

The Beavers
(29-37) got things going in the fifth, trimming their deficit to a run on an RBI triple from Craig Stansberry and a run-scoring double from Myrow.

Reliever
s Matt Wilhite and Jason Bulger, who got the save, held the Beavers hitless over the final three innings to seal the win.

The Beavers and Bees meet again Friday in a doubleheader at PGE Park, starting at 5:30 p.m. The two teams will pick up a game that was suspended due to inclement weather at PGE Park on May 2. The regularly scheduled game, now a seven-inning contest, will follow and start no earlier than 7:15 p.m. Tickets are good for both games.

NOTES: The Beavers were without manager Rick Renteria, who traveled to his California home for his son’s high school graduation ceremony. Hitting coach Jose Castro filled in during his absence … Myrow’s 13-game hit streak is the longest for the Beavers this season. Myrow is 29-for-64 (.453) over his last 19 games to raise his average from .190 to .349 … former Beaver Jack Cust, now with Oakland, will get credit for his 200th minor league home run when Friday’s suspended game is completed. Stansberry also will get credited with a home run … Thursday’s game was College Night, featuring alumni groups from several universities … each of the Beavers’ last six home games have been decided by one run.
