FRESNO, Calif. – Tim Stauffer pitched six strong innings, Craig Stansberry had four hits and Pete Laforest hit his 14th home run to help the Portland Beavers defeat the Fresno Grizzlies 5-2 Tuesday night at Chukchansi Park.

Royce Huffman continued hit hot hitting, going 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored for the Beavers, who have won four of their last five games. Stauffer (3-2) struck out six and limited the Grizzlies to one run, six hits and just one walk. Scott Cassidy came on in the ninth to get his fifth straight save. Matt Kinney (3-7) fanned eight but yielded four runs on six hits in his six innings for the loss.

The Beavers (33-38) took a 2-0 lead in the first. Stansberry singled, Oscar Robles doubled and Portland got a run-scoring groundout from Paul McAnulty and a sac fly from Brian Myrow that scored Robles. Laforest’s two-run homer – his fifth in the last eight days – doubled Portland’s advantage in the fourth.

Fresno (38-34) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when William Bergolla doubled and scored on Dan Ortmeier’s two-out RBI single. Bergolla had three hits to lead the Grizzlies. Stanberry’s 23rd double of the year scored pinch-hitter Mike Sansoe from first base in the seventh for a 5-1 Portland lead.

Ivan Ochoa’s sac fly in the seventh scored Tomas De La Rosa with the Grizzlies’ second run. The series continues Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.

NOTES: Wednesday’s game will mark the halfway point of the season for the Beavers … manager Rick Renteria adjusted his batting order, hitting Stansberry leadoff and Oscar Robles in the No. 2 spot … Stauffer threw 117 pitches in his six innings … both teams had 10 hits each, but Fresno stranded 11.
