Winterhawks lose to Americans 4-2 before big rematch

The Portland Winterhawks (51-10-1-2) dropped a 4-2 decision in Tri-Cities Tuesday against the Americans (37-22-1-2).

The Hawks scored the lone goal of the first period when Shaun MacPherson scored at the 18:22 mark to make it 1-0 going into the second.

It became a 2-0 lead 5:39 of the second when Ty Rattie scored his 40th of the season. The Americans tied it with goals from Justin Feser and Parker Bowles to make it a 2-2 game going into the third.

The Americans took a 4-2 lead at the 8:16 mark of the third when Connor Rankin and Zach Yuen scored within two minutes of each other, and that score held as the final.

The Hawks are back in action at home Wednesday when they host the Edmonton Oil Kings at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in a rematch of last year’s WHL championship series.
