Coos Bay Speedway goes from asphalt to dirt

COOS BAY, Ore. - Things are getting dirty at the Coos Bay Speedway, but it's something racing fans have been anxiously awaiting.

Say goodbye to the asphalt track, as mounds of dirt will cover the entire area, creating a dirt track and motocross arena.

Chuck Prather, the owner of Coos Bay Speedway, said they interviewed about 30,000 race fans around Oregon and most of them wanted to see the action on dirt.

"We got lucky because we ended up with Jason Boden and Chris Jager, one of the pro-riders coming out of this area," he said. "They volunteered their time and equipment to come out and build the track."

Prather said the arena will bring in a greater variety of riders, racers and spectators.

"There's just so much more available to us by playing on the dirt," he said. "It has three tabletops, a series of moguls, a rhythm section, several real sharp hairpin turns. It'll be just like watching motocross on TV."

The first dirt show is a paint pass on August 18, where cars have to touch before passing.

However, the motocross arena will be open for practice on Wednesdays and Sundays.
