Police: Trials security worth the $1.5 million cost

EUGENE, Ore. - Triumph on the field and off.

"I think this has been right on the money," said Eugene Police Detective Jeff Donaca.

According to Eugene Police, security was a success. But it didn't come easy.

"You don't realize right away the planning that goes into putting up fences and getting security set up, but it's been a huge undertaking," said Donaca.

And it wasn't cheap.

"Almost everybody has been working overtime on this," said Donaca. "We weren't able to get any vacation time during this time. So people are putting anywhere from 50 to 150 hours of overtime in to pull something like this off."

So was it worth the estimated $1.5 million?

"I can say from my standpoint, being here inside the venue and for the fans, it's worth it," said Donaca.

And was there too much security?

"You never want something bad to happen in your city," said Donaca. "So to over-plan is good."

Donaca said members of law enforcement will meet this week for a debriefing to figure out what they can do even better in 2012.

We asked several local taxpayers how they feel about footing part of the bill for the extra security. They said it didn't bother them at all.
