Brandon Roy selected as all-star game reserve
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Despite an up and down season ravaged by injuries for many key players, fans of the Portland Trailblazers have reason to celebrate today as NBA coaches have selected Blazers guard Brandon Roy for the NBA All-Star Game as a reserve for the third straight year.
Roy has missed six of the Blazers' last seven games with a sore right hamstring and is due to be reevaluated on Monday.
In his fourth NBA season, Roy is averaging 23.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and five assists.
Fans vote for the All-Star Game starters, but coaches determine the reserves.
This year, the game will be held on Valentine's Day in the new Dallas Cowboys stadium. Dallas products Chris Bosh of Toronto and Utah's Deron Williams were also selected for the All-Star game, which will include seven first-time selections.
The Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks each had two players picked as reserves with Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo chosen from the Celtics, while the Hawks are sending Joe Johnson and Al Horford.
Rondo and Horford will both make their first All-Star appearances, as will Oklahoma City swingman Kevin Durant, Charlotte's Gerald Wallace, Memphis forward Zach Randolph, Chicago's Derrick Rose and Williams.
Also selected by the coaches of the NBA were hometown favorite Dirk Nowitzki from the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol, and New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul.
Possible all-star snubs include Trailblazer forward LaMarcus Aldridge, Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum, New York forward David Lee and Clippers center Chris Kaman.
