PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Trail Blazers issued a major announcement Saturday night about the professional basketball team's All-Star player.

The Blazers decided the best way to get Blazers guard Brandon Roy's hamstring healthy is to shut him down until after the All-Star Game. This means Roy will be out for the next three games, and will not be able to take part in next Sunday's All-Star Festivities.

Roy had been selected for the NBA All-Star Game as a reserve – for the third straight year. Fans vote for the All-Star Game starters, but coaches determine the reserves. This year, the game will be held on Valentine's Day in the new Dallas Cowboys stadium. Selected players

Roy has missed the past 10 games with that sore right hamstring. The team had hoped that the three-time All Star would be ready to go for the Feb. 6 game against the Lakers. However, Roy told us he still felt pain in the leg at Friday's practice. He said he hoped to feel ready for the Lakers' game, but didn't even try to go to the pre-game shootaround.

Team members hope he can return shortly after this forced break. Meanwhile, Jerry Bayless said his leg is OK, and he will start in Roy's place.

The Blazers also announced that Roy will undergo another platelet-rich plasma procedure. This is a cutting-edge non-surgical therapy that is supposed to speed up the healing process. Roy had a similar procedure about two weeks ago in Seattle.

He will be re-evaluated before Tuesday's game with the Oklahoma City Thunders.
