Lucas Fort (with Grandpa Sam) first big salmon trip off the Columbia near Astoria - he got the biggest catch off the boat - bigger than grandpa's! The next week at school he had to write a short descriptive about “the best 90 seconds of your life” for English class – of course he described the catch! And it won him the Evergreen Middle School Principals Pen Award! Here it is: My pole thrashed and bent all over the place, “I think I got a fish!” I pulled the pole upwards with all my strength, then reeled. I pulled, then reeled the line up to 35 feet, I thought for sure I had him! The salmon I had on my line was not fighting, it was pulling on the line. I, only for a heartbeat, let slack on the line then “WIIIZZ!” my line went out to 60ft! I repeated the pull then reel drill and soon I was up to 15ft, when I saw the 4ft silver flash. I was so excited the moment the fish was in the net, I could have started crying, but instead I used that energy to hold up the 30 lb salmon for a picture, but before all that happened, we had to kill the fish. And so, the last thing that salmon saw, was the excited stare of a 12 year old boy.
