Every so often we see signs on light poles and street signs notifying everyone in the neighborhood that coyotes have been spotted around the neighborhood. The neighborhood I am speaking of is in the area of Cooper mountain elementary school and Errol Hassell Elementary School, all the way to Farmington Road, Murrary BLVD and 185th Ave. The signs people post typically warn people about the coyotes eating/attacking cats, dogs and other domestic animals that are outside. There are two reasons why Coyotes would ever attack or sometimes eat pets. The first reason is the most common reason. We have been moving into the territory they inhabited first. Therefore, they have significantly less prey to hunt and they don't have much room to roam. When they have no prey or not enough prey, they will go for pets in urban areas. If they don't have anything, starvation will set in and they will then have the potential to attack any food source. Now, this next reason is one that most people immediately think when they have attacked a person. Rabies. If they have rabies, they can, and typically do attack humans, among many other things. Now, Even starvation can cause them to turn on humans. This is not very common. Though, starvation is becoming more and more common due to us building more houses deeper and deeper into where they live. I don't not want to scare people. And these are only possibilities, but they are becoming common due to us. So please, I encourage people to relocate any wild animal back to their habitats instead of killing them. They do not mean any harm.
This morning about 2:01 (November 17th) I heard a fairly large pack of coyotes howling. It sounded like a pack of about 4 or 5 and also sounded like it may have been around Errol Hassell.
Once again, please do not be alarmed. I am just sharing my knowledge.
