The Multnomah County Transportation installed a snow gate for Larch Mountain Road on Monday at milepost 10, closing off the last 4.5 miles of the road for the winter.
The county closes the road to protect travelers from hazardous winter conditions and to cut costs on winter road maintenance every autumn.
Several warning signs posted along Larch Mountain Road warn drivers about the road closure by the snow gates ahead, including two signs posted at the gate advising the potential dangers ahead.
The road reopens when the snow melts every spring.
Larch Mountain Road leads to the 4,056-foot Sherrard point overlook, Larch Mountain day-use area, and the Larch Mountain and Oneonta southern trailheads in Mt. Hood National Forest in eastern Multnomah County.
