Bus shelters are a mess in Hillsboro.

If properly maintained bus stops are nice to have conveniently located in the neighborhood. But these bus stops at 10th and Walnut in Hillsboro are a major source of litter. It was nice when TriMet made the shelters no smoking. But as a result many people smoke and discard their butts about 15 to 20 feet away from the shelter. Maybe since TriMet doesn't own that property they feel no obligation to clean up those areas. I don't know why TriMet doesn't clean this up but it is an ugly mess. After a while you wonder is it really all that nice to have a bus stop in your neighborhood?

Not Trimet's fault. Simple solution. Have Hillsboro unmarked police posted near the bus stop. Take videos. Hand out littering citations with big fines. Have local media cover it. Pretty soon, disgusting smokers will think twice before tossing.

Trimet is a joke at best. They're stuck in a permanent state of industrial denial that anything is wrong with their oh-so-perfect transit system, let alone the crappy bus stops.
