Nehalem Bay Crab Derby Returns with a “Battle of the Bay” and a “Booby Prize”
NEHALEM BAY, OR -- May 2012 -- The Nehalem Bay Crab Derby will return to the Oregon Coast Saturday June 9th. Kelly’s Brighton Marina is hosting the competition as a fundraiser for the non-profit Rinehart Clinic and the North Coast Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Among the grand prizes in the heated competition is a free vasectomy compliments of the Rinehart Clinic.
Here’s how the competition works: On Saturday morning before the Derby begins, event staffers will release 26 tagged crabs into the Nehalem Bay at Kelly’s Brighton Marina and 26 tagged crabs at the Jetty Fishery. The released crabs represent thousands of dollars in prizes ranging from gift certificates to coastal hotels and fishing gear. This year in addition to the vasectomy, the Rinehart clinic is donating the Booby Prize – a free mammogram. At 5pm, organizers randomly draw the numbers and match them for prizes.
“We were all sitting around the crab shop one winter and drummed up the idea of a Dungeness derby to lure Portlanders to town,” said Kelly Laviolette of Kelly’s Brighton Marina. “We wanted to have the proceeds benefit The Clinic but we needed a hook and that’s when we came up with the idea for the free vasectomy,” said Laviolette.
This year, Saturday’s festivities will take place at both Kelly’s Brighton Marina and The Jetty Fishery. In a friendly Family competition, the two Marinas will be competing in the Battle of the Bay. The Marina that produces fewer tagged crabs will make the bigger donation.
Derby dates coincide with the yearly Free Fishing Weekend, when no license for crabbing, clamming or fishing is required. Additional activities include a Children’s Art Competition, Clam and Oyster Walk, Beer & Wine garden, and a local farmer’s market section. The Rinehart clinic will be providing free blood pressure screenings on site and The Wildlife Center will be providing an up-close and personal exposure to rescued wild animals such as several species of owls and eagles. No experience is necessary, as staffers will be on hand for instruction. Reservations for taking part in the Crab Derby are not required, but recommended by calling Kelly’s Brighton Marina at 503-368-5745 or go to
