Poised on my front porch beside my little 4.5-inch refractor telescope, fitted with a solar filter, my point-and-shoot digital camera in hand, I eyed the minute hand on my watch as it crept past 3:05 on June 5, 2012. Drat, those clouds! They were covering the sun! Then, just minutes later, the sun emerged, and there was Venus, right on schedule, making her last-in-this-century appearance, like a stunning black beauty mark, journeying across the face of the sun--a sight this Portlander will never in her life forget.
