Jody Amri of Stafford Primary in West Linn celebrates her Education Celebration Award with her second grade class

West Linn teacher wins Education Award

Jody Amri, a second grade teacher at Stafford Primary School in West Linn, has been named the third term winner of the Education Celebration Award, presented by the Oregon College Savings Plan. Amri received a $1,500 award for herself, and a $5,000 check for her school. The award was presented at an afternoon ceremony in front of the entire student body in the school gymnasium yesterday, where more than 500 elementary children expressed unbounded enthusiasm.

Stated Amri, “I am incredibly honored, but I also feel that this is not just for me but for all my students and my colleagues. I am thrilled that the Oregon College Savings Plan is recognizing educators.”

Amri, who was selected from 167 nominations from around the state, has been teaching for more than 20 years, the last dozen at Stafford Primary. She empowers students to think globally and foster relationships with other schools around the world, including collaborating with a second grade class from Island School in Langeoog, Germany, and another in Victoria, Australia. She actively engages students and parents in meaningful classroom and homework activities through a classroom blog that supports district curriculum as well as state and national standards.

Amri utilizes and embraces technology, seeing it as a key component to a vibrant, enthusiastic and educational environment. Through the use of YouTube, Skype, Voice Threads, World Education Games and other online academic resources, she motivates students with online learning materials and prepares them for the future with technology.

According to Stafford Primary School Principal Jen Freeborn, “This is an absolute honor for Stafford to have Jody recognized in this way. She is an amazing, high quality teacher who values her students and families. She gives 100% in everything she does. The West Linn Wilsonville School District and the Stafford community are very proud of her.”

The Oregon College Savings Plan presents the Education Celebration Award to an educator in the Oregon K-12 educational system who has motivated and inspired children to be better students. The first term winner was Stephen Buckley, a third grade teacher at Sunnyslope Elementary School in Roseburg; the second term winner was Catherine Hawkins, a kindergarten teacher at Central Linn Elementary School in Halsey. In total, the Oregon College Savings Plan has awarded $17,000 to schools – three $5,000 winners and four $500 runner-ups – and $4,500 to teachers during the 2011-2012 school year.

Nominations came from Oregon residents who had the opportunity to observe an effective educator in action. Educators were nominated, which described to the Oregon College Savings Plan in 250 words or less why a particular educator should be recognized with Education Celebration Award.

The Education Celebration Award program will return for the 2012-2013 academic year. For more information, visit www.OregonCollegeSavings.com in coming months.
