PORTLAND, OR) – USA Fencing is bringing the Junior Olympic National Championships to the Convention Center in Portland Oregon on February 14th through the 17th. Tournament organizers expect over 2400 top fencers from the US to compete at this event, which is free and open to the public.

Cody Mattern, who is a 3 time US National Champion, an Olympian and is a member of the US World Team who won the World Championship, and a now Coach and Fencing Master at Northwest Fencing Center lives in Beaverton, Oregon. Mattern says “We’re thrilled and honored to host the Junior Olympic Championships here in Portland and are ready to welcome the best and brightest youth fencers in our nation to compete for both a chance to become a national champion and earn the right to represent our nation this April at the Junior World Championships as a member of Team USA!” This will be a terrific opportunity for local fencers to showcase their talents in a high profile setting, Portland is a hotbed for fencing. This will be a terrific opportunity for an estimated 100 local fencers to compete in this tournament in men’s, and women’s events in all three fencing style disciplines.

It has been several years since local fencers have had a national event in their own backyard. Portland last played host to a North American Cup national fencing event in 2012, which attracted hundreds of fencers from around the country. Mattern won GOLD in this national event to a home crowd of Oregon fencing enthusiasts and fans as this was his last, he retired from competition circuit on a high note. “There is nothing like fencing in front of a home crowd” Mattern says reflecting on the win, “now I look forward to coaching and hearing the crowds support our local Oregon fencing talent and future champions as they take to the fencing strip and show all who come, what fencing is!”

Fencers will compete in three weapons: foil, epee, and sabre. There will be men’s and women’s events and the local Oregon Fencing Division is planning to provide free introduction to fencing guided tours to Portland area locals who come and take part in these Youth American Championships. Fencing events will be going on from 9am to 6pm daily February 14th-17th.
