A large wildfire is raging out of control on the southern slopes of Mount Adams, in South-Central Washington State's Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Several hundred acres of pristine sub-alpine forest have already succumbed to the flames in this very popular recreation area. With strong west winds still prevalent in the area, it seems probable that the fire will continue to expand to the east.

Such a shame that the forest service was repeatedly denied the opportunity to log in this area by environmental activists. A few key acres of beetle killed timber being remvoed twenty years ago could have minimized the available fuel for the fire.

This is one of the most beautiful spots on earth, a place I have come nearly every summer of my 52 years to recharge my personal batteries and rejoice in the splendor. That it is ablaze just breaks my heart. It is an irreplaceable treasure.
