At about 10:00 AM a rising column of steam and smoke was rising from what appeared to be the base of Mt. Adams. The smoke appears to be rising from an area approximately 10 miles north of Trout Lake, Washington. Initial reactions were an eruption due to the large volumes of steam but reviewing the logs at http://www.geophys.washington.edu/recenteqs/latest.htm there were no reported seismic indications of an eruption.
The column of smoke and steam appears to be almost twice the height of the mountain. Mt Adams is registered at 8116 ft which would make the column an estimated 16,000 ft.
Prevailing winds are currently carrying the smoke and steam to the East.
