Those of us here in the Northwest know exactly what disasters can occur and volcanoes enlightned us to a new set of disaster, one that would for ever change peoples lives.
When Mt St Helens errupted it was literally "Hell on Earth".
At first it looked like a small plume of smoke and ash and it queickly developed in to an Atom bomb like plume.
Some people that were close to it were vaporisedright where they stood, some were burried alive like Hary Truman.
Songs were written by local artists like "Please Mr Wheyhauser don't take my land away" and many others.
She was the mountain that was spoke of not jsut in the United states but all over the world as her ash cloud thined and had reached in to other countries.
But, none could compare to the Hell that was directly east of the angry lady of fire.
She Choked citiziens of yakima and darkened there skies making it like night and if that wasn't mad enough she was taking out not jsut the power, but she was destroying cars, trucks and machines as well as her ash would choke carburatures and eventaully destroying the engine of those machines.
You Had to wear a mask in order to breath the air , the masks filtered out the ash and eventaually becamme clogged and had to be changed.
It was important to wear the mask other wise the ash would make a cement like substance in your lungs and you would die a hellish death.
We here on the west side thought we were lucky, untill one day we awoke to no color at all, jsut grey.
The power was flickering as the ahs acumilated on the power lines causing the electricity to arch. Now that was an interesting site to see.
"Don't you Dare touch that" dad yelled as we were going to brush the ash off the car "You will strip the paint from the car." he explained.
Yeah, it was Hell litterally.
The short cut to Yakima is forever Gone.
Infrastructure for ever destroyed.
And the Cowlitz river would no longer be able to support tugs an more.during the summer the river can become so shallow that you can walk across from Kelso to Longview.
The Toutle river was forever changed as well.
There was a smelting company along the Cowlitz river, but it could no longer remain open because it could not get tugs to haul the Smelt. The river would simply refill with ash and sand once it was removed. They finally gave up and decided to just get the river to cary water and drain with out flooding the cities along its banks.
After the the destruction came new life.
We had healthier crops for farming and things began to return to normal.
Life started to return to Mt St helens and it started a new.
To this day if you see some old groath, you can pull the moss away and still find ash. Yes, Nature found a way to self contain that nasty caustic hellish nightmare of a substance.
It made for good fertalizer to and that is how we got new crops and healthy ones at that.
So i the long run, Form the destruction came a new creation.
Mt St Helens is not done yet. She is still changing, still churning, still rumbling. She is till building her dome and any one vneturing there better be for warned.
She can and will take your life with out a second thaught.
She is the one that dictates who will live and who will die.
She is the one that dictates what will be destroyed and what will not be destoyed.
She is after all..an active Volcanoe. And it would be wise that in that we do not forget that.
I remeber the Hell she had unleashed.
