On our Way to Going Solar

My family and I are preparing for an adventure in to the area of Solar Power.

My plan is to have 4 to 6 Solar collection units and to aquire some 12 volt appliances.

My plan is to go with DC as much as possible as using an inverter uses a lot of energy .

There are many things out there ranging from 12 Volt Crock Pots To 12 Volt frying pans so that you can fry up a burger if you wanted to.

The next work horse is the inverters.
They have a wide range but anything under 2,000 watts is pretty much a toy. But they are hungry for power.
They make the mother of all inverters that are 10 kw and higher and are not cheap..But they will run a washer and dryer but you will need the next item that will be discussed.

Batteries ah yes, that inferno contraption that pleagues us in our automobiles Electric or gass guzlers.

Batteries are inpmportant as they are the units that store the enrgy to be released in to you house and or devices.

Then there are the panels they range from 15 Watts to 200 watts and range from Amorphous to Mono Crystalines.
And the higher the wattage may not be the best. If you live here in the NW you will want the Amorphous pannels as these type can produce power on clowdy days where as the higher wattage and more expensive panels would work well on the eastern side of the mountains.

The Idea is to have in coming power ballanced with the out going power so that you will not ruin your batteries this is done by 2 ways
Which you will need the third item.
A Charge Controller is a device that controlls the amount of charge going to your battery, with out, your batteries would explode.

There are many different types of charge controllers ranging from 4 amps up to 240 amps.

I will be using a 70 amp charge controller later.
The one shown in the above picture is 4 amps.

The higher the Amps in a charge controller the more panels you can us with out harming your batteris or shutting the controler down.

The charge controler serves alos as a voltage monitor.
Varying controlers give you varying amounts of data.

Some will give you the amount of wattages in coming and out going.

It is up to an individual on there prefferences with charge controlers.
Every one has what they think is right for them.

For me I will opt for keeing it simple.

Now we can not go fully off the grid as we rent.
But we sure can take a bite our of the power bills by suplimenting power.

So Our adventure in to Solar is been a positive one thus far.
We are on our first set of panels and will be getting 3 more sets. As we go along.
So for us a total of 4 units will be enough and 45 watts each will be enough to get us throguh even a power outage should our generator run out of fuel.

Stay tuned as there will be upgrades coming and explanations on as to why the upgrdes will be needed.

Can you? By removing yourself from the grid, you eliminate one flow of income to the utilities, thereby necessitating the reduction in force of employees required to deliver power to the rest of the customers.

Got panel set number 2 today. Interesting that they made two different models. As for promoting loss of jobs? Really? Why ? How about why not go green?

Thank you. Very informative. It helps to cut expenses especially when one lives off the gubmint teat.

You know what else is important? Good typing and spelling. I love solar, and stories like this are great...but when you make it hard to read...people just turn off.
