08/08/2006 - Capt. Corie

What started out as a routine five-hour bottom fishing trip, turned into a spectacular event! Last Saturday, Capt. Corie from the charter boat Reel Nauti took six people up to a popular spot off of Lincoln City. After taking all but one meaty Ling Cod for her passengers' limits, it was time to move on to catch their limit of rockfish. Stopping at a finicky and tricky reef system, Capt Corie decided to give this spot a shot.

Quickly, the bite was on! Within just a few minutes, passenger Dave Beanland of Klamath Falls, OR. thought he was stuck on the bottom. Being the attentive and helpful skipper that she is, she tried assisting him with getting freed from the bottom. With clever technique the lead gave way and she handed the pole back to Dave. Moments later, he thought he was stuck again. As Capt. Corie reached for the pole, Dave yells out "FISH ON!"

As the fight went on, the whole boat was hopeful that this was something special. When the behemoth Ling Cod reached the boat, everyone gasped with surprise! "It was the biggest Ling Cod I had ever seen," says Capt. Corie. "I knew I had to net this one and get it back to the harbor", she said. As she skillfully tried to scoop the fish, being careful not to spook the large cod, the line broke! With an overwhelming sense of relief, the fish was safely in the net.

Knowing that she had something special, the fish was weighed promptly after returning to the dock. Shockingly, the fish tipped the scale at 47 lbs! With much pride, Capt. Corie boasted about her exploits and talked with several Depoe Bay old-timers. The last anyone could remember it had been over 7 years since a Ling Cod, of that size, was brought into the harbor. Tired, but happy, the whole crew of the Reel Nauti celebrated the event.
