Here is a great summer Steelhead that my 12 year old son Zan caught this past weekend on the
Sandy
River. He was side drifting with me plus 3 other adults in the lower river. He went 1 for 3 with this being his first keeper steelhead. This fish was so fresh that it still has sea lice on it!
I’m not sure you have ever been side drifting but 4 of us would line up at the side of the boat and sequentially cast to a spot starting from the back to front while the boat would drift downstream. This can be very challenging since timing and accuracy of each cast is critical for success. To put a 12 year old in the middle of a bunch of casting fish crazy adults is unique for most side drifting anglers. All I can say is that this kid can cast with the best of them which makes spending a day on the river with him even more special.
Take care and thank you for a great segment focusing on local fishing successes.
