A friend and I fished yesterday at the mouth of the Cowlitz River on the Columbia River in the Satisfaction. I trolled a red flatfish and he a silver bladed and orange spinner in water from 6 - 24 ft. deep along the "color line" where the two rivers blend and there is a shelf from 9 - 17 ft. deep. After Dave hooked a Chinook Jack I swapped to the tried and true Flash Glo spinner with brass blade and orange beads on the body. I caught two nice steelhead estimated about 11 lbs., very good fighters, and released both since they were natives. We anchored and we both fished the Flash Glos. I caught another steelie, mint bright and this one was a hatchery fish/ Keeper that weighed 11 lbs. and Dave hooked one about 8 - 9 lbs. but it spit the hook right at the net. We had to leave at noon for appts., but five fish and another couple take downs is a pretty good morning; we were lucky to be the "hot boat" that day. We saw many fish caught in other boats (10+ ?) nearby including one hatchery fish a guy claimed was 15 lbs. but looked 13 to me. No adult chinook caught that I could see. There is much more fishable water now that the area has been dredged deeper.

I'll try and go again a few times this week before I return to teach at Kalama Middle School. I also serve on the Columbia River Citizens Advisory Group for the Columbia River with the WDFW and ODF.

take care and I hope your season is picking up too,

Clinton Winn

ps, I couldn't resist sending a pic of my 23 ft. Thunderjet which I moor in Kalama, and some of the fish we've caught in years past (10 chinook over 30 lbs. in the last four years, halibut near Victoria, B.C. is 73 lbs.).
