In Southeast Portland, the snow started at six in the morning. At first, road conditions seemed reasonable, without too much ice or slipping. We tested the chains on our car and I drove in the snow for the second time in my life! As a teenage driver, I was very inexperienced in driving period, but I could get around without too many difficulties. Then, the snow started coming down even harder, and my Mom told me it was just too dangerous for me to drive anymore.
My stepdad took over and we did a few errands, and I saw as our neighborhood was turning into an ice box, drivers weren't being cautious enough and were slipping and sliding everywhere. The east winds picked up, and the snow startwed to pile up. We got home and decided to park the cars for the rest of the day because it was getting so deep!
By night, we had three-foot snowdrifts in our driveway and I had snow up to my knees. I'm six foot two, and I have never seen that much snow in Portland the fifteen years I have lived here with my Mom and Stepdad!
My stepdad recalls the winter of 1968 though, and this storm isn't too dissimilar to that one! A foot of snow fell in the valley and lasted for a week. My mom recalls that my Grandpa had to go to work during that storm, and he couldn't start the car because of the frigid temperatures, and he had to call a cab. She also recalls people skiing down the street in the snow drifts. She was just a little girl then. This storm seems very similar to it. The question now is: will it last a week like the storm of '68?
