Somewhere in SW Portland, a local community of ducks search for food, shelter, and a place to swim. Refusing to migrate, they mate, raise chicks, and live here 365 days a year. The apartment grounds they live in (rent free) has a creek that froze up. The ducks huddled together in the last open patch of water 24 hours a day. Churning and warming the water with their movements, they kept this waterhole from freezing solid. Unable to reach grass and other plants under the snow, they beg the local residents for any scraps of food. The look of their beady eyes as they turn their heads sideways convinces the residents to offer what they can. The birds don't dare enter the units; most of these residents have cats. These needy birds won't starve this winter.
